Unhappy Sunroof Broke, please describe method of fix.

Hello.. I got a 1986 944, where I must have stripped the driver side gear for the sunroof while taking it on and off. I heard this is accidently done because the motor doesn't stop when retracting the arms??? Well, anyhow now the passenger side arm is the only one that will come back up, and hold the sunroof in place, and will also raise the right side of the sunroof up crooked (since the left one is stuck all the way inside the car). What is the best way to get this fixed? I haven't gotten a good look at how the whole sunroof functions, or even how to get back into the gears, but if someone can show me a link, or describe the best way to get in, replace what looks to be the problem, and get out, it would really make my day. Thank you so much!!!!

Have you tried a search yet? I'd start there. Just click on search at the top of this page, this has come up many times before.

Time to replace the sunroof gear. Pretty easy to do. Here is the process. LOL...

NOTE: The '86 can have the old system with cables / without the gear.
Check here:

If you have this, you need a new cable set.
Mine is an '86 and has the "old style" system.

My '86 951 also has the earlier system as seen in the pic Hans posted. My problem is that the motor turns, but the gear on the motor does not seem to engage the "roto-router" cable drive so the arms don't raise or lower. The cable looks fine and the gear looks fine, I just think the white plastic cover that holds the cable on the gear isn't putting enough pressure on the gear to cause it to engage.

I've looked through prior posts and haven't found much on fixes for the earlier sunroof models. Any idea where to get parts to fix this one? Does anyone else have some other clever fix for this? Thanks.
