Lightbulb Head Swap

Hi All
Is it possible to put a 16 valve (S or S2) head on an older (8 valve) N/A block? IF it is possible would it increase horsepower? Thanks for your input.

it should be possible as the head gaskets for all are the same. I think it would be minimal gain for a lot of money.

Only the 944S head will fit on the 8-valve NA. You would also need to get the 944S intakes, exhausts and computer in order to bring HP up to 944S levels.

The later '89 2.7L NA and S2 heads will not fit on the earlier 944 8-valve NAs because those are based upon the later 104mm bore blocks. The coolant passage in the front corner is different.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like more work than it is worth right now.

Wouldn't you also have to change the pistons as the 8v pistons do not have the reliefs for the extra two valves?

Yeah huh... Since the 944S had higher compression than the early 8v 944NA, you'd have to put 944S pistons in as well to get that additional benefit in power...
