Sound System for an 83' 944
Has anyone tried using 6.5" speakers in both the doors and rear locations? I can't put amps or subs in the car as I am using the rear seat for my 4yr. old and the rear area to carry my Mtn. and Road bike for work and play. I will need to power the speakers from my Kenwood 50w x 4 head unit. I know the
4x6's drop right in but they really don't sound great. Any suggestions?

How does someone go and say "hey can you help me, I would like to get a bike rack for my Lambo or Ferrari" First they should be shot for doing that to these cars but second what the hell does that cost. I am sure the sales guy is like they run about 300 but for your car it will be 3000

Well, with my 86, since i have the speaker fade switch thing, my front outputs from my head unit ran to the speaker fade switch, and was redistributed to the front and back 4x6's. I bought pioneer, the stock ones literally crumbled when i took them out, but no matter what brand 4x6, its still a 4x6.... you wont get good sound.
I then ran the rear outputs from the head unit to 6x9 speaker boxes. I bought infinity reference 2 ways since i'm not a huge fan of subs. All in all i was pretty happy with this setup, but i did recently put the stock (or the one i bought the car with) tape deck back in, and i took out the 6x9s... it sounds lame now. I'd definitely think about amps though. Maybe you could fit them in the spare tire area.

The rear speakers are open to just about any size speakers with some mild to heavy modifications. The fronts are pretty much stuck with either 4x6's or 4"s. Best thing to do is buy some really nice 6"s for the rear (maybe components) then get some nice 4"s for the front.

I'd say ideally try and fit some 5.25 components in front (need to buy/make adapter to locate speaker out of way and make sure the magnet clears the door) and 6.5s in the rear, add a sub if you'd like more bass.... Run the speakers off a 4 channel amp, sub off it's own, and that's about as great as your 944's going to sound without major mods... Sound deadening helps but weight/stereo.

Anything but the stock 4x6's in the front looks ricey and I"m sure I'm not alone in this opinion
You can fit 6x8's in the rear speaker location but you have to make your own mounts. If you do run bigger speakers in the rear I would install high pass crossovers for the front 4x6's
