My Dad's 944 got wet inside. Now that it's dried out it has a strong musty smell. Is there anything that will remove the smell short of taking out the seats and steam cleaning it?

I think Tuff Stuff or something like that makes one of those capret cleaner in a can things. It is foam, you apply it an agitate the carpet, let it dry, then vacuum it out. This has worked for me for the very same problem. Then get a can of "New Car Smell".

FeBreeze also makes a tough odor version- for "pet" smells (aka cat ****.) Worked real well on getting the - "Oops, Chris left the windows down during a 2" rainstorm in the Buick and soaked the velour seats"- smell.

When I bought my 951, it had a stinky musty smell. I looked in the rear hatch area and found that the foam under the carpet was soaked, so I removed the foam and pulled back the carpet as far as I could. I left the car sit in my garage all winter with the hatch open to let it dry out. The stench is pretty much gone now.

Take used dryer sheets and throw them on the floor behind the seat. They do a pretty good job of soaking up the stink, plus it's cheap.

I've got a '87 944S (25k miles) purchased a year ago. It has a musty odor coming from the vents, turning on the heater or AC causes it to get much more pronounce. I've removed the seats and cleaned the carpet, even replaced the seats, and the smell is clearly coming from the vents now. It is bad enough that after a 20 minute trip, my clothes have picked up the odor.

Is there an easy way to clean the heater core and venting?

Thanks.

GFC! First post! Welcome!

Im not too sure about this, but my sisters VW had a nearly identical problem. Do out cars have a pollen filter? Or, when you have the hood open, and take the black plastic cowling off where the battery is, isnt there a filter of some sort? Have you check to make sure thats all cear and nothing has grown mold or rotted there?

Thanks for the welcome!

I was under the hood last weekend, and used water to hose out both sides, around the battery (found some surface rust!), cleared those drain vents and all the plant matter is now completely gone. The fresh air intake around under the hood has no odor.

Unfortunately there is no pollen filter, just some chicken-wire like grating on both fresh air intakes, and my guess is some pine needles and such has slipped in at some point. The intake doors still work, and both close when the engine is off. And except for that and a flimsy plastic cover over the whole works, there is no real protection from organic crud getting in to the 944's HVAC system.

I know with AC units there must be a drain hole somewhere for the moisture to drip - does someone know how I can find that so I can flush it out with water? My guess is some organic matter in there is the source.

Thanks.
