Default Need advice on dying carpet black

Alrighty -- so I'll be swapping the champagne carpet from my old car into my new one. The carpet itself is in awesome shape. Unfortunately, maintaining champagne-colored carpet in a DD is a huge PITA.

Additionally, the PO of my current car already changed the front carpet to black.

Soooo, I'd like to dye the rest of my champagne-colored carpet black. However, it's my understanding that many dyes out there make the carpet stiff and feel like crap. I still want to keep the carpet feeling nice, soft, and smooth -- but I want it to be black.

It's a shame that I've come to this conclusion, but it's been a true bitch keeping the carpet looking how it does. se la vie.

Black carpets are so common, are you sure that just replacing it isn't the easiest way to go?

That was my thought, if yours is in good shape you should be able to sell it and get a black set. I got a low mileage black set without the trunk mat for $50, and it looks like new.

Yeah I've been thinking about that route, too. How much would a full champagne carpet in good condish go for?

I just really don't want to deal with selling/shipping my old carpet, and buying a new one...

Don't bother with the dye, it's a disaster. Replace.

That would be my advice. I have only tried it once about 10yrs ago and I had no luck. Also I'm assuming most car carpets are probably polyester based which isn't as easy to dye as a cotton blend so the color will fade quicker and might even bleed off.

I have to agree with selling your current carpet and buying black carpet. I looked for some carpet dye's a couple of years ago and also talked to some shops for a BMW I had at the time and all of them said it doesn't come out very well or last very long. If I HAD to try a product today, I might be willing to give the Leatherique carpet dye a try since they make such good products for leather but even they say you have to be careful or else the carpet will be stiff.

Hmmm I would, but I'm in Arizona. And you're in New York.

You, uh, willing to ship? Unfortunately trunk carpet is stiff and doesn't like to be bent...

BTW thanks for the input, guys. This is what I was afraid of...now I've just gotta find a great condish black carpet...for cheapish.

Or hell, I may just retain the champagne.

Yeah don't dye. I've never done it on car carpets but I've tried in the past and I'm guessing that even if the dye works okay on the carpet fabric itself it may not work on the edge trim and in particular the stitching.

So you could end up with black carpet with champagne stitching.

Just keep the champagne and get some black floor mats and hatch mat, thats how my 88' car was before I stole the mats out of it for my 86'.

Yeah that's what I've been doing. Sigh.

It's really not much of an issue; the champagne looks better IMHO anyway. But black is far more stress-free.

And my "trunk mat" has been a bunch of towels.

Don't feel bad I had beach towels protecting my hatch carpet from the sun for a while.

I might be selling a Loyds rear hatch mat, its black with "Porsche" embroidered across it in red.
