Play in balljoints will lead to early wear on tires. Clunking in drive train and shimmies at speed.
Best way to check. Drop lower control arms and wiggle the stem.
You can check them with wheel play and such. But it could be other things and isn't easy.
Ours are easy enough to pull the control arm and find out..

Could a bad ball joint cause a strange sound (when you walk on cracking ice sound) while going over bumps, cracks in the road?
Thank you
Christian
PS I started to hear this sound after an alignment. The second I asked my usually very polite mechanich about it, be became very apprehensive.

It may also create "bump steering", i.e. the car changes direction upon riding onto a bump. I know from experience with my former car (not a Porsche) - almost got into a head-on collision once... This is due to changes in the steering system geometry, and resulting change of the toe, read: unintentional steering.
If this is your problem, fix it as soon as you can...
good luck, Stan

Hmmm. My car makes 'popping' noises when riding over bumps. Only from the driver's side, where I have an A-arm with 190k miles (soon to be re-fit with Rennbay's bushing kit). On this side, the bushings for the sway bar are also very worn. I have a new tie-rod assembly and new Koni Sport shocks. When I replaced the struts, the balljoint did not feel particularly loose. About the same as the new one on the passenger side. I suspect the sound is from bad bushings on my stabilizer, I'm just going to replace both .

I have an 88' 944 NA and when I would go over slight bumps (like a small curb) it would make a slight pop or chacking noise from one side. Then when I took it in for an allignment, they told me they were bad. I also had slight vibration at around 60 mph. Replaced them with rebuilt ones and have no problem.
