Post OT BMW service engine light

I know a bunch of us have BMWs in addition to the porsches, so I figured I give this question a try here:

The following is true of EVERY cycle of tank of gas... regarding a 2000 323i with around 54000 miles.

When the fuel gauge falls just a bit below 1/2 tank, the service engine soon light comes on, then goes off again right around the 1/4 mark on the gauge.

There have been no changes in the performance of the vehicle, gas mileage, or running noises, etc.

Any ideas?

What do you mean by software upgrade?
I'm thinking maybe something in the tank... maybe even just a cap problem?

I say take it to the dealer and let them have a look at it. Maybe its a known issue.

I had lot's of strange errors reported on my 1995 525 and traced it down to the CCM-relay.

I will at some point buckle down and take it to the dealer... probably within a three week period. But I wanted to get some ideas of how bad it could be before I called them!
Thanks for the input thus far.
As far as software systems go: If there's a problem therein, then I suppose it's my own fault for letting her buy a new BMW with all those dag-nabbit gizmos!
