mmmmm damn how hard is it to take the alternator out?

That's a relative question. Harder than replacing the battery, easier than replacing the clutch.

... if i can do it its not very hard. Follow the clark's garage procedure. Just be aware that the fan shroud gets in the way.

Another test that has not been mentioned: Disconnect one terminal of the batt and hook up an ammeter in series with the battery and the disconnected terminal and see if there is a drain. There might be a nominal small drain due to radio memory or alarm, but it should not be much.
