I have a chance at getting a 912 free!!!
Was just showing this fella, who is doing some construction on the building I work in (and a close friend of my folks), the Rennlist site.
He has a 67' 912 that he wants to get rid of. He said it has been sitting in his driveway and his wife wants it gone. He said he has had to appraise it each year for insurance and the last time he insured it (3 years ago), it was appraised at $4000 Canadian. It needs interior work - but everything else works great. He said it needed leather "behind the seats". I'm not familiar with the 912 - anyone here know anything about them?
Bottom line is I was showing him the classified's and he was saying he wants it gone by the end of next month. He said he would rather just give it away than go through the whole selling routine.
By the way, he owns a pretty big construction company, so I think I lucked out and found one of those, "Ahhhhh - I just want to get rid of it, but don't need the money" guys!!!
My stable may be increasing........
Is it worth it to take it for free (well, that part is worth it), or is it a headache waiting to happen? (this question coming from an S owner - oh, the humanity!!!).

Well, in this case you'll definitely get what you paid for!
Kidding aside, might be a fun project. But the 911 guys still won't let you "join in all the fun" (insert Christmas tune here).

Assuming it is not a rust bucket get it!
Remember these cars did not have the same level of under coating protection as the 944.
My Father bought a 912 back in 66 new in New York. Saved alot of money for it and had a blast with it. Sold in the early 70's 71/72 I think after over 100k after the frame rust got severe.
Make sure you drop a line on the 912/911 forums about this also.
Note the 912 has the latest 356 Engine (1.6L) of its day (90hp I think) and an early 911 body so it not really fast and can be expensive to repair. Even more so than the 944.
At worst you can try to sell it later if it does not work out for you.

I was thinking along those lines.
I love my S the way it is and eventually may get a Turbo - but if I have this 912....I can work at it and add a fin and perhaps a different engine. I'm guessing it would be "easier" to put a 911 engine in a 912, as opposed to a 944 or something.
911 engines are cheap, right??? <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />
90 Horses - whaaaaaaaaa????? Man, I'd be in Rice range!!! I guess they handle pretty good though. Hate to have to balance those carbs!!
I'll keep people updated on what happens and post some pics if I get it.

Well a story of my friend who bought a 912 project car just at the end of the summer.
'67 912 needs tons of interior work but engine and tranny are in pretty good condition and car drives well. My friend starts working his was through the problems to get the car into pretty good driving condition. After driving it about 1500 miles or so he ended up throwing a rod. The car is now a nightmare for a college kid to have to try and repair. He will probably be parting it out or dropping a 911 engine into it.
They also handle VERY well for a car of its age. The one my friend had was fitted with 15" fuchs sporting 215 width yokahama's that gripped really frickin well. He could hang with me through the corners in my S2 for the tight stuff. Just didn't have the HP to keep up with me on the straights and stuff.
Anyways, It could be a hastle, depends on what kind of condition it is in. Even then it might end up being a bit of a gamble, and possibly even a money pit.

Please don't put a turbo whale tale on it... It would destroy the nice lines and lessen the cars value if you sell it (guess you won't lose anything on it but still...)!

I knew a guy who had one. He put too much money into it and took a bath when he sold it. To buyers, it will always be a 912 no matter what you do to it.
No wonder the owner wants to give it away.

A $4000 car that needs $5000 (your first rebuild) worth of work is worth exactly= ?? You do the math.. And you think 944s get no repect?
There hasn't been a 912 owner that didn't ask how to convert it to a 911.. and the answer is exactly the same as the guys who ask about putting a Turbo on their 944.
On the bright side, MAYBE it doesn't need much work, (it's been sitting for HOW long???) and those who don't know will think its a 911..
Best of luck. Any guesses why no one has taken it off his hands sooner? Sorry to be negative, just the voice of reason.
