Second side note: VW Vortex is the best VW forum out there, but they are indeed more concerned with subwoofers and superchargers than they are with real, actual issues. Is there some other board out there, perhaps small and new, that could be goaded in the direction of a Rennlist? This place be high brow like a muh****er.

Nice looking VW, now if you put some dubs on there you'll be all set....lol.....

Anyway, they are good little platform, shocks, springs, and some sticky tires and you'll be happy with the handling, it won't be a p-car, but it will be whole new animal....

I'll list mine:
80 Rabbit: bought with blown headgasket before I had my license, never fixed it.

81 Rabbit: Still the best car I ever owned. Only left me stranded once.

81 Scirocco: Replacement for my Rabbit, good car, rusty but trusty.

83 Scirocco: Coil overs, no interior, no heat. Fun as hell but became a bit too uncomfortable for every day use.

86 Jetta: worst POS I ever had!

90 Jetta: Good car, never had any major problems with it, Dealer service sucks!

96 Jetta: OK but the cable from the back of the radio to the CD changer broke and the dealer fixed it with a sticky, Tar like substance. My wife never drives with the windows down, she loves air cond. so if the windows were down 10 times in the life of the car that would not be exaggerating, however all four power window motors failed at one time or another and I had to replace two track assemblies in the windows, not too cheap or easy. Also had a wiring harness in the trans replaced. Luckily under warranty or it would have been very expensive. Dealer service sucks!

2000 Jetta VR6: Love the car, but I worry because it is now out of warranty. Starting to see small things happen (Solenoid to open gas door died, CD changer cuts in and out on warm days) stupid stuff that will probably drive me away from VW when the next purchase comes up. Dealer service
sucks!

Bottom Line: I have been very loyal to VW for the last 12 years and I don't feel that the products and service they provide repay my loyalty. Did I mention that dealer service sucks? I worked for Honda for 9 years and if you are looking for reliable daily driving, even though they are boring to drive, you'd be hard pressed to beat the maintenance record of a Honda anything.

--EDIT-- I was too impatient and missed that you already bought one, sorry

Ollie-

I'm not sure about what "Vento" means here, but I DID hvave a freind (I mentioned earlier) who had a VR6 Jetta, who somehow got ahold of one of those badges from Europe- it was very original for around here...

The best bang for buck is a a2 jetta with a VR6. I just picked up a 92 jetta in great shape for $1900. You can get a wrecked doner car with a vr6 for $3k. The swap is very easy and well worth it. I have built and driven these and will be doing one as soon as the porsche is back on the on the road. I will try and post some pics of the vdubs in my area.

Hey Dave, How did you get the Thule wind deflector to sit on the windshield? Mine will only sit on the roof.

Alright, looks like I may have to upgrade the wheels - Dave and 951Sickness, what are those?

You guys stop with the upgrade talk - it's *supposed* to be a commuter... I already have a hobby or two, or three

haven't had the rack on the car in a couple years, so i'll try to remember. i think i may have bent the brackets a little and just pushed the deflector all the way forward. i didn't want the seal beating on the paint. do you have the brackets under, not over the bar?

skip- they're 16" Mille Miglia MM 11-2's. but you'd need to do the spring/shocks too ...

It really could use some new wheels. They don't have to be expensive or super light or whatever, but that black box is excruciatingly standard. You know, with a set of four Hellas on the front...some driving lights and some pencil beams...a bit of suspension work, some offraod tires...

Ah yes, Dave, your right the brackets are indeed over the bar...I'll try the under approach. Skip, the wheels on my are are Borbet Type "T" in 16 inch form. They were $160/each from Tire Rack and weigh about 20 lbs (on the bathroom scale, rim only). The car is also lowered one inch with Bilstein/H&R setup. BTW this Jetta is my commuter car

that'll lower the brackets about 1.5". on the brackets, the long ends (long slots) are on the bar, short ends on the deflector. i have the long ends of the brackets pushed all the way forward and the deflector screws at about the half-way point of the short slots. i didn't bend them...

in case you guys didn't know this, most Jettas shipped without a trunk light. bugged me for years. turns out there is a trunk light. it mounts in the rectangle hole in the center of the cross-frame just forward of the trunk lid. the wire for it is stowed behind the left side trunk liner. you string it up thru the frame to the rect. hole and plug in the light. push light into hole. it's switched from the trunk latch.

part no. is 1H0 947 113, $10 from the dealer. cheap, easy and great upgrade...
