I think the 666 is the 'cosmoline delete' option. They smear this goo over the cars for the transport from Germany. You can opt out here in the US, some guys who will concours only their cars ask for this. I heard once when you do that here in the US you have to pay for air transport, as they don't want the car exposed to salt air on a boat without those protective coatings.

Yes, my German spec 944 - delivered new in Germany - has option 666. Since it wasn't shipped anywhere, it wasn't given that coating of stuff.

Not really much in it 14 years down the road though.

Try this link I found at another site - can't remember where.

<a href="http://www.kindel.com/Porsche/options.asp" target="_blank">http://www.kindel.com/Porsche/options.asp</a>

You'll have to copy and paste into you browser. I don't post enough to figure out how to use the right features of the list!

Good luck.

MRJ I looked at my June production 84's options code and found 464. This is "Without compressor and tire pressure gauge". My window sticker from Porsche Cars North America Inc. lists as standard equipment "electric tire pump". The option codes from my old 84 "Goldie" (March production) doesn't show the 464 option. So what's up with this? Where does the mystery ZVW 327301 tire pressure gauge fit into this? Did Porsche stop supplying the compressor and gauge sometime between March and June leaving Porsche of North America to supply the ZVW items? I have found reference to VW offering the ZVW tire pressure gauge but haven't yet searched to see if they also offered the compressor. For now I'm guessing no because I don't believe any period VWs had space saver tires. I'll check with my brother, he had a Quantum, the only water cooled VW model from the 80's I never owned.

I could be wrong, but believe that is incorrect.

The option I believe indicates a single-stage paint (which does not have an additional clear coat as it is instead mixed in). Hence a lack of 'lacquer preservation,' I.e. clear coat. As for the 'chrome' part, the option code was probably used on prior models where that was relevant, and they carried over the text.

Cosmoline really has nothing to do with the paint or 'lacquer' in this case. Cosmoline is really to prevent bare metals from corroding. It is also injected into body cavities where there is limited or no paint.

I've never heard of cosmoline delete. I've heard of undercoating delete, which may include deletion of cosmoline, but never heard of just cosmoline delete. Undercoating delete is pretty common on any car built for competitive use. GT3 RS models also have undercoat delete. Bad idea for a street car IMO, but it does weigh a lot I guess. Usually 40-50lbs I think.

Honestly cosmoline delete would be a terrible idea on the manufacturer's part - the cars are outside in any conditions during transport. No cosmoline and the car could arrive with something rusty - instant warranty issue.

However, does someone know for sure? It's still a pretty vague option text!

R01 I can't say. But I think R74, in this case (if it is applicable?) refers to a suspension package. It may be just spring rates. Or it may just indicate the 'base' selection.

But they may not be applicable, they may only be for a 928 or something.

This is interesting. I'm surprised they bothered creating a code just for this: awfully model-specific!

Option 153 is interesting too.

Toast by Francois' :

I am looking at a purchase of such a car, containing the so called 'Touring Pkg.' It cost over 1800 bucks ...... significant on a 30,000 dollar car when it was made.

I believe it is a continuance into the series 2 cars, of the once coded H52 and H54 pkgs. such as what my '84 coupe came with including sunroof, sport shocks, sport springs, heavy duty front and rear sway bars and LSD.

On the 944 I am negotiating on, the build code tag states it has this code number and the owner states he knows it has this Touring Pkg. But, I have no knowledge of this package and wonder if the sport seats were also a part of this group. I have not done a visual inspection of the trans code on the car to know about the content of LSD, and do not know if it has the original yellow Konis on it yet either. I am hoping it does have these both as well ...... I do know it has front and rear anti-sway bars as well as FUCHS and the sport seats and sunroof. Leaving me quite interested about the purchase.

German cars came without the 666 option as a default - so without laquer and chrome conservation delete. The conservation is a layer of wax. A bit more detailed explanation is given in this document (though from the 996) on page 2: http://bethnrayndogs.com/car_docs/Po...Grp0_11-98.pdf

Preservation: New Vehicle
- Do not remove paint preservative or protective covers which have been applied at the factory.
Information: The preservative (coating) applied to new vehicles must be removed after 6 months at the latest.
Otherwise stains can appear in the paint work. Without preservative, a new vehicle must not be parked
outside unprotected for longer than 6 weeks (possible damage to paint from environmental influences).
In this case the new vehicle must be preserved again or parked in a covered shelter.

The odds are high you won't find it. Q88 is an option code for a package of option codes. I have a few on my car as well. I had my local dealer pull the options based off of the VIN and there were quite a few not reflected on my option code sticker individually but it makes sense once you consider Porsche grouped commonly ordered options into packages. Unfortunately, it seems even Porsche doesn't know (or won't release) what their option package codes are.
