Question CarFax???

I know it's kind of lame, but I am hoping someone can run a CarFax for me. I am bidding on a 911 on eBay and would like to know if the records are as clean as the car seems to be. My 3 months recently ran out and there was a post about doubling up your subscription so soon after the first expires. The VIN # is WP0EB0916JS170929. Yeah, it's a 911 and if I win the auction would anyone be interested in a 1990 944S2 Cab, well maintained with extras?

do you really own an xp8? weren't there only like 50 of those made that year? How much are you asking for the cab, any shots of it?

I personally have NO faith in carfax. Years ago I bought a chev suburban with a clean carfax. After is mysteriously burned to the ground two months later, the ins co found that it had been totalled recently, a rollover.

There is a lot of body work on that car. Is that a factory slantnose widebody NA cab? I don't recall that as being a factory configuration. If not, what was the motivation to so drastically change the bodywork? Possibly a major accident?

I am not trying to rain on your parade, just don't put all of your eggs in a carfax basket. Have an inspection done as part of the deal.

Never replace common sense with a report.....but its nice to get the odometer reading tracked through the years. Also, it should track salvage titles across different states. Some people take salvaged vehicles to states with no salvage designation and sells it with a clean title. I havn't thought of any way to find these things on my own other than using carfax.

Thumbs up

Just to answer some questions here. For Brent, this car is a DP Motorsports Conversion. They got the car from Porsche in Germany then did the conversion,. I agree completely with the assertion that CarFax doesn't always tell you if the car has been wrecked. Of course that's why you do the PPI. But it does give you an idea of how the mileage is being racked up. So this car wasn't wrecked ten converted. It would be a slavage or rebuild title if all the paperwork was done correctly. I know that here in Missouri, if you get a salvage car and fix it up. You then take it to the MO Highway Patrol for a safety inspection (more than just the state required inspection for plates and tags)and then you can get a "clean" title.

To Red 944, my car can be seen on the Rennlist Phot Site at <a href="http://gallery.rennlist.com/gallery/album01" target="_blank">Parade 2002/Boise</a>. Just click on my wifes picture and ten click on either picture that comes up to open the nested albums. THere is a shot at Bogus Basin in the album that opens with my wife. I think there is a shot with me in front of the Captiol Building in Boise in the Road To Boise album. The car ran great the whole way. Lots of maintence done for the trip (4300 miles). I'll probably put the car in the paper here soon, on the PCA site, the Rennlist Classifieds, and eBay. There is a 944 Cab on eBay now, 7100 miles and resrve not met @ $20000+. Mine will be a third less. I have lots of extra stuff available as well, manuals, fuse box w/relays and fuses, half-shafts, etc.

I have #36 for 1999's run of Saleen XP-8's. It's basically a sheep in wolf's clothing, but still sharp. You can see it here, <a href="http://saleenexplorer.freeservers.com/saleenexplorer004.htm" target="_blank">Saleen Explorer</a>. Mine is 99-036 in the middle of the page just below 99-0013. I have heard varying numbers on the Saleen Explorer run. They were made from 1998 thru 2001 and the numbers run from 183 to 247 total for the 4 years. I wish I had the SOHC V-6 instead of the V-8 AWD though. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Carfax guys,
here are three quick tales of woe with carfax.

First
Mother in law gives my buddy her 4 year old caravan. car has 40k on it. DMV wont let him register the car unless he signs a waiver stating the mileage is wrong. why? when the car was inspected two years earlier the idiot put in 10th of a mile in the reading so it had 200k two years earlier. carfax shows a rollback of something like 180k. he has all maintenance records etc, but...

Second
My brother buys a 93 325I in march of '00. car has 22k. confirm with dealer mileage is ok, etc. we buy car in brooklyn, ny. walk to dmv and register car. woman at dmv inputs mileage as something like 108k, which coincidentally is the purchase price or sales tax.

We get title with 108k and call dmv. he gets car inspected a few months later at say 35k. carfax says in one year mileage went like this: 20k when inspected by old owner, 108k when title transferred, 35k when inspected. we had to get affidavits to send to dmv in albany ny to get them to correct title. all they did was erase mileage. now carfax shows no mileage amount when title was transferred.

Third.
My 944 was leased for 4 years to the PO. he has a 15k a year lease. every year he registers the car with penn. dmv and puts a mileage down. when car is 4 years old he buys car. he is allowed to have 60k on car, and purchase price is negotiated with citibank when lease expires. guess how many miles are on title?

60k, and at the same time he registers the car and his registration renewal says the car has 32k. I call dealer that maintained car and he confirms the mileage was 56k when PO traded the car in.

I have copies of all the registration papers showing a progression to 50k, and a copy of the original title from penn dmv, and the paperwork transferring the license plate (tag) "944S2" from citibanks ownership to the PO's ownership.

I buy the 944 when it has 56k. carfax says that between 94 and 00 potential rollback of 4k miles. use your logic. why put a mark on the car by rolling odometer back a measley 4k.

a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
