Lightbulb just a little advice...

NEVER USE THE SPARE TIRE OF THE 944!!

I had to use mine today- I picked up a nail in the tire and have no other car (yet). It (of course) was pouring rain to make it all better. The spare, when it says don't go over 35 mph, it means it! It gets really scarey. between that and not being able to touch the gas pedal, it would lose rubber every time. i would recommend not using this IF AT ALL POSSIBLE!!

Umm, it's a spare tire. It's not designed to offer performance of ANY kind. You're damb right I'll use my spare tire if I'm out in the middle of nowhere and I get a flat or blowout. I won't be putting it on just for jollies, though...

Doesn't say not to go over 35 mph either, it reads 80 km/h which equates to 50 mph.

it sounds like you put your spare on the rear.

i'm pretty sure it says somewhere in the manual that if you loose a rear tire you are supposed to jack up that side from the middle, take the front off, take the rear off, put the front on the rear and the spare on the FRONT.

i bet those of you who think you are helping your street performance by saving weight and taking out your spare have never blown out a tire in the middle of nowhere at 1 in the morning, out of cell phone range and miles from a house.

this happened once when i was riding with my brother in his impreza. as we casually mounted the spare tire in five minutes i promised myself that if i ever wanted to save that weight in my car, i would just underfill my gas tank. not having a spare tire is just plain stupid.

*and*

I meant that tongue-in-cheek... but since you're being a bit of an asshat anyway:

I always have the tire, but one night I was sans pump with the 83. I actually managed to get the car into Parker City, IN via backroads on the spare - while it was uninflated. Now that was slow going.
It's also helpful to carry a can of the temporary filler.

Only if you want to ruin the tire and possibly the wheel! If you use that stuff on a tire, most places won't fix it with a permanent patch. I guess they don't want to deal with all the sticky gook and the possibility of the tire exploding on them...

Yea... the temporary tire crap is just that, crap. It does nasty stuff to rims.

I run 17's, no spare tire. AAA card, a cell phone, and a fire arm is all you need.

Yea, fat lot of good an inflatable spare does with the compressor long gone. This has been discussed before, but where ARE all those damn things?? Where else would a previous owner put it besides the freaking car??

It is suggested that the econo spares should be placed on the non-drive wheels. This is why AWD vehicles should have a full-size spare...

what's a "fire arm"?

ok, i guess i shouldn't have been that harsh on people who drive with no spare. perhaps some of you live in the city and never ever find yourself cruising a sketchy back road at 2am. but around where i live there are tons of places with no cell phone coverage and i do a lot of driving on deserted winding roads through the woods where i would hate to be walking miles to find someone to wake up to wait 3 hours for a tow truck to try to find me. all to save 10-15 pounds.

Another thing to be aware about is for anyone who is running extended lugs. When I purchased my 83 it had nice 16" BBS wheels, extended lugs, and superlight aluminum lug nuts. However, these extended lugs also had a longer shoulder on them, which I noticed but didn't pay much mind.

Well that is of course, until I got a flat tire in a construction zone on route 42 in the middle of rush hour traffic on a small construction zone sized shoulder. I jacked the car up, took the wheel off, had a state trooper pull up and yell at me for stopping there (I didn't want to ruin a perfectly good tire by driving the 1/2 mile to the end of the construction zone), pumped up the spare and then it wouldn't fit because the lugs would hit the shoulder before they contacted the thin steel spare.

My advice, carry a spacer and trial fit the spare in case of an emergency.

Well, I have the original compressor and spare, but since my brake upgrade I've been unable to source a spare that will fit over my fronts. So, if I flat, I guess I get to put mine on the rear no matter what.......
