Hi,
I have had my '87 944S with 46k miles for nearly two months and after fixing some minor issues I have hit my first scary problem.
Yesterday I took the car out for some fun with a 951 driving mate, lots of hard acceleration and cornering (including my fave- Highway T). Once (and only once) the car made a series of (3-4) bang/cracking sounds during a slow 90 degree right. I ignored it but today on the interstate it started again, soft at first but then very loud. I got off the interstate, headed home and noted the following : sound is directly related to roadspeed, louder during acceleration, worse on RH turns, reduced on LH turns, disappears completely freewheeling with clutch disengaged.
I immediately suspected CV joints but... a couple of days before I had adjusted the handbrake. I did it by the (Porsche) manual and confirmed it did not rub after adjustment. I will double check tomorrow but the car freewheeled for a long distance on the flat (clutch disengaged)with no noise and the drums were only slightly warm when I got home so I think the handbrake is not the cause. You agree?
I will check for play in the CV's tomorrow but would appreciate advice on diagnosis and repair. Anyone got a copy of the Excellence article on the replacement procedure?
I had hope to introduce myself without presenting a problem, ah well.
Cheers,
Chris
P.S. If some of the phrases seem odd, it's because I am a limey residing in the U.S.

Hi Chris,
Welcome to the board! You'll find this place is a great resource on all things 944.
I suspect you problem is the CVs. I'm going through a similar problem on my car, where a noise that almost sounds like a tire grinding against the fenderlip is heard around hard left-hand corners. Tires show no sign of abrasion, so I suspected the right rear wheel bearing...had them checked out, and they were given a clean bill of health, so I think it's the CVs!
I'd do a search of the archives here...just click on "search" at the top of the screen. That should produce a wealth of info.
Good luck!

Thanks,
I had read other posts where it was described as a grinding or ticking. This made me wonder as mine is a definite loud bang/crack sound from the right rear.
Would anyone know what size the cheesehead/triple square bolts are on the CV joints. The manuals and PET don't specify.
Cheers,
Chris
