Default Replacing A/C Fittings

I have been working on my ’91 S2 with an a/c problem. With the system emptied of refrigerant, it wouldn’t hold a vacuum which means I have a leak somewhere, so I’ve been systematically changing all the seals at all the hose/pipe connection points in the system and have a question: Does anybody out there know how to get to the fittings between the evaporator coil/expansion valve where they pass through the firewall from the engine compartment? It almost looks like the engine has to come out as ridiculous as that seems. Anybody out there ever done this?

Thanks

I did my 85.5 when the engine was out but I think it can be done. I think each fitting uses a simple 10mm head bolt (the ones that are everywhere on a 944). It will be tough though to reach. I followed someones suggestion here and pumped my system full of argon (other gases might be better but I have argon available). That helped me to find the leak was at the high side schraeder. Stay with it though, working AC is huge to vehicle value. Grasshoppah.

Check all the valves... with a good valve tool specifically... my high side was loose too...
