Shifter keeps coming disconnected?!

So, while I'm driving my shifter keeps coming disconnected from the shifter fork. If I can find the C-clip it's usually a pretty quick fix. But it's been pretty annoying to deal with. What is a more permanent solution for this problem? Is this a good time to maybe install a short shift kit?

If you really want to fix it right and make it shift as good as new it just takes the right drill bits and about 2 hours.

When your stick comes out, put it back in.
To fix my worn-out 944 shifter I did something similar to Steve's link. Mine was too FUBAR to repair like that so I:
1. chopped off the old pin
2. drilled a hole where the pin use to be, size of hole chosen carefully
3. put a bolt through the hole to act as my new pin, bolt size chosen carefully
4. welded the bolt to the shifter
5. drilled the shift rod out to 7/16"
6. cut a piece of 7/16" brass hobby tube as long as the hole in the shift rod
7. put brass in rod
8. put bolt/pin in rod
9. put nut on the bolt/pin
The bolt size was chosen so it barely slips into the brass tube.
The hole I drilled in the lever was exactly the size of the bolt.
The bolt I used was one of those that is not threaded for about 1" near the head. This way the part inside the shift rod is more robust. Also I used a lock-washer with the nut, and I think a bit of blue loctite. It feels fantastic! The point of the brass tube is that if anything wears out from now on, it will be the brass not the steel, and I have almost 3 more feet of the brass tube.

I fixed the disconnection problem by getting a 5/16 E-clip from Lowes. A little muscle got it on and it hasn't been a problem since. However now that I know what cause all that slop I wan to fix it. Suggestions?
