2 Lame, 2 Idiotic
I just cannot believe what some people will do to their vehicles:
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2420629177&category=34203" target="_blank">Flame Throwers</a>
And can you just imagine the liability of the guy selling these? Of course, I very much doubt whether he can even think past breakfast.

$50??? Who's he think he's foolin, hell, my gas tank is right there! I'll just poke a hole in it, run a small hose from there to the tail pipe and take an old spark plug wired up to a 9v battery with a momentary on switch and mount it at the end of the tail pipe... shouldn't cost me more than a couple of bucks...
Um, sorry... got carried away... guess I'd better take my meds...
Seriously, please tell me people don't really do that sort of thing, do they? And that the police would crack down on them if they did...
Regards,

My dad used to talk about putting a spark plug in the very end of the tail pipe back in the 50's. He did not fail to mention some of the car fires he saw with that set up. (circa '58-'59) He said it didn't work very well either.
It's just not a good idea.

Actually, this is a popular mod with the hotrodding group. And I was bored, so I read up on it, and it's actually quite safe. It doesn't have the back fire problems or the uncontrollable flme problems. I'm not meaning to sound rude, but you should read into an item before you criticise it's safety or liability.

Back in the day, ('50's) The exhaust velocity was not there, excess unburned fuel was. (READ;Backfire) They also did not have sealed fuel systems as today. (Read; fire)
Regardless, they really are a safety hazard.

Blowing un burnt gas into your exhaust and igniting it is a bad idea, regardless of how you do it and how many safety precautions you put on.
It's stupid, useless and dangerous. Nothing you do will change that.
Note that it needs to be installed in cars without and cat systems, so it's basically illegal too.
I mean c'mon. Spitting fire out your exhaust. How bright is that. YEah yeah I know, my intent was not to pun.

In the hands of a person of reasonable intelligence, it shouldn't be dangerous.
