Question 968 Gear Ratios

I know this topic has been discussed on the forum before but, it seems there was never a definitive answer reached.

The Porsche PET shows two different ring gear and pinion shaft sets for the 968 - one is a 34:9 (3.778) and the other is a 31:9 (3.444). However, the PET lists the same part number for both (01E 409 143 E).

There seems to be a consensus that all US model 968 transaxles have a 3.778 FDR. However, that's where the consensus ends. There have been suggestions that European 968s got the 3.444 FDR transaxles. And, there have been suggestions that the 3.44 gear ratio listed in the PET is a misprint.

I do know that the 968 Turbo RS used a ring gear with a different FDR. However, the specs I have list it as a 3.400 FDR. It also had a different 5th gear(.882) and 6th gear (.711).

If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it. Better yet if you happen to have a 968 trans apart and could count the teeth on the ring gear, it would help greatly. I'd like to hear from folks in the US and Europe if possible.

Finally, if anyone knows for sure that the 3.44 ring gear and pinion shaft do in fact exist (i.e. a good part number) or if anyone has part numbers for the Turbo RS 5th gear set, 6th gear set, and ring gear and pinion shaft that would be the ultimate.

Thanks,
Clark

I am the one who started the earlier thread because I wondered about the final drive on 968's after seing the options in the PET.

It is definately a missprint in the PET. A 3.44 final drive would make all the gears incredibly heavy, and this is not the case on any 968 (normally aspirated).

We have a 968 CS (european) and a 944 with an "american" 968 gearbox. They have both the same gear-ratios.

So the short answer is: All 6 speed 968 (normally aspirated) have a 3.778 diff. I do not know about the 968 Turbo S and 968 Turbo RS
