is torquing *that* important?

To expand a bit on M758's earlier post on calculating torques with some info for those of you not in the mechanical field... there are 'pre-calculated" torque values for pretty much every thread size and form in various standard mechanical engineers' hanbooks / references. These are based on things like thread diameter, thread form, material, etc.

The main place where calculation is needed, AFAIK, is in 'special' aplications, like head bolts or studs, where there is an unusual situation with regard to temp cycling, thermal expansion, vibration, gasket sealing needs, etc.

But most of the standard ones are already calculated, and just require looking up. You could probably find a lot of 'em in tables on the web with a quick google. The only problem with using that vs. the factory spec is that you're now the one making the decision on whether it's a 'special' application...
One other note on oil filters... _alway_ remember to check the old filter to be sure the sealing gasket came off with it... having both the old & neqw gasket on the filter mount doesn't work too good.... BT,DT, got the oily t-shirt...8)
