Update.

I tweeked the shifter mounting plate and now I can shift into fourth if I first shift into fifth without letting the clutch out, and then shifting into fourth. I can also downshift from fifth to fourth. What else can be adjusted?

And in the process I managed to destroy me Speedometer Impulse Sender on the transaxle, so anybody have one of those, hopefully cheap?

Thanks
Tom

Maybe you have seen this
http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/trans-07.htm

Check if everything is installed the right way. Clutch disk works or not. If you can get most gears in cluch works. So the broblem is in transmission or linkage.

FIXED, YEAH!!!!!

I stopped by a trans shop yesterday to talk turkey with a guy I met some time ago.

He asked if the trans was every at an extreme angle. I thought about it and it was at an extreme angle. My jack gave out and the trans got hung up. He said to try and invert it the other way and see what happens. So I poped it back out and tipped it the other way, shook it around and reinstalled.

So..... I took the car out and now I have all five forward gears and reverse.

Just wanted to let everyone know how this turned out and to see if anyone has the Speedometer Impulse Sender on the transaxle I broke.

Thanks
Tom

Glad it's fixed but I'm not sure what you mean by 'extreme angle'. The transaxle was fully bolted up to the TT or wasn't it?

I will clarify. I had the trans on a trans adapter on my jack after I unbolted it from the TT with it jacked up in the air. I went in for the night, well actually the week , and when I came out, the jack pressure relieved itself and the jack and trans started to lower. Well, the trans adapter got hung up on something and the trans went almost vertical with the input shaft pointing up.

So I figured what else do I have to lose, so I removed the trans again, inverted it the other way, spun the shaft around, and changed the gears, and beat on the case with a rubber mallet, I also sacrificed a chicken just for good measure .

After the reinstall, I took it out and damned if not the first time I tried fourth there it was.

I know it sounds weird, buts that's all I did and it worked.

Now to order a Speedometer Impulse Sender, get the car inspected and enjoy it.

Tom, I should be able to pull one of those speedometer senders from an '86 NA transaxle. Let me know if you want me to look for it.

You didn't specify that you wanted a FIVE speed clutch when you bought it

just joking.
What got messed up by tilting the tranny too far ?

Van, PM sent.

Funn944, the guy was telling me that with old VW trans they can be stored on end, or something like that, and sometimes when they are reinstalled the something gets out of whack and sometimes tipping it back over and running through the gears puts it back in place.

All I know is it worked And I am not going to question it.
