Default "S" cams into an "S2" motor?

Hey guys,

As some of you may have read, recently the cam teeth stripped in my s2 and i am now having to buy new cams. Ive heard of several people that have put "S" cams into the "S2" because they are easier to come by, and they provide a power increase. is this true? could i just bolt in "S" cams into my "S2" motor?

Thanks in advance!

I thought it was the other way around, the S2 cams being an upgrade for the S. In any case if you need teeth repaired these guys can do it:

I think the exhaust cam is the one that is used to increase performance. I want to say it was John Milledge that did this? I may...or probably am.... wrong but look through the archives.

if you give the specs of each it's easy to see where a benefit can be made

I think the "S" has smaller valves than the "S2", so they use cams with a higher "lift" to extract as much performance from the "S" engine as they could given displacement. Can't remember which one is the one to swap for a gain on an "S2", but I am pretty certain you only want to change one camshaft.

Viper 944 has a 944S that he's been converting to an S2 -- I'm not 100% certain on all the parts he's swapped out but it's about halfway there and he put down 173 or something near that on the dyno -- might want to shoot him a PM

Hmm, I only found duration specs. Measured at 1mm of valve lift.

944S
Intake opens 4 degrees ATDC
Intake closes 40 degrees ABDC
Exhaust opens 36 degrees BBDC
Exhaust closes 4 degrees BTDC

I make that 216/212

944S2
Intake opens 3 degrees ATDC
Intake closes 47 degrees ABDC
Exhaust opens 39 degrees BBDC
Exhaust closes 7 degrees BTDC

I make that 224/212 with some exhaust cam advance.

Best would be to get good used cams. Maybe it is cheaper to buy the whole engine, take the cams out and sell the rest.

you'll have 8 degrees more duration if you install an S2 intake cam on an S, 8 degrees less if you go the other way. The exhaust cams have the same duration at 1mm lift.. Now you have to find out ramp rates to get a better idea if the extra duration really means anything

Honestly just looking at the duration numbers, it wouldn't be worth it unless you got the cam for free because there are so many other variables that can negate the possible added performance (we're only talking a couple hp if any at all)

I don't know if you can use an exhaust cam as an intake cam so I can't comment on switching between the two
