If the Viper is stock and that MR2 is twincharged, it might be a close fight. OTOH, if the MR2 is stock with cams so mild that the valves will never hit the pistons, this would indeed be funny!
If you want to abuse a MKI MR2, from a standstill, rev it to redline, drop the clutch, and watch as the revs fall way down with absolutely zero tire squeal.
I had a first generation MR2 several years ago. Once I outfitted it with sticky tires and some good brake pads, it was tons of fun. I even managed to take it on some gravel logging roads and get sideways with it. OTOH, the motor was anemic as hell.
I once sat in a friends Toyota Atlantic racecar with the same basic motor. Now that is a real car! The motor is tuned to make about 250+ hp from the same basic 1600 cc engine, albeit with a stronger block.

That's probably just braket racing.
You can race a 1985 4 cylinder Chevy Celebirty against a brand new Diablo if you want to. It's all in what time you guess.
