I'm in a bit of a delimna that I'm hoping some of you might help me solve.
I'm looking for a daily driver (even through cold winters).
I'm now debating between a 93 Stealth TT and an 86 951. I've found a prestine example of each. I'm now trying to decide which one to go for.
I had a 944NA sometime ago, and loved it.
The 944T has only 60K miles, has had the belts done recently, a clutch and steering rack replaced and some suspension upgrades done. It's been chipped with the 'porsche cup' chip and supposedly is running 275hp. It has only been driven 4K miles in the last 4 years. I'm concerned about aged seals.
The stealth has also ~60K miles, has had all major work done (belts) and has stock 300hp.
I'm looking for reliability (daily driver - including winter), cost of maintenace and performance. I'm planning on making some long distance trips aswell.
Which should I go with? I love both equally. The 951 is a porsche, and I love its simplicity, but the stealth is newer, has AWD, and a lot of neat gadgets.
Your opinions would be greatly appreciated!

I would opt for AWD since you are in Calgary. Id prefer the Mitsu 3000GT VR4 to the Stealth TT, but I still have to figure Dodge parts are a heck of a lot cheaper than Porsche. Is also a 93 and not an 86 so it should stand up to some more beating on a day to day basis you would think. With anything American though, you never really know.
Id get both.

Another Calgarian!
I drive my '87 944 Turbo (no ABS) year round. It makes close to 400hp at the wheels (almost there....) and I have no problems except for the big storm this year, when my garage door was completely snowed in =).
I use Michellin Alpins on the stock 16" wheels for winter.
For long trips, I've made road trips to Vancouver (Vancover to Calgary in 6 hrs hehe), Seattle, San Francisco, Victoria, Edmonton (many trips). As long as you maintain the car right, it's very reliable.

Before owning the Porsche I owned a '94 Mitsu 3000GT. It wasn't a turbo but I was very active on WWW.3Si.org which had many TT guys. The people that weren't modding the hell out of their cars didn't have many problems. I big weakness in the TT cars is the Tranny and transfer case. Again if you are keeping the car stock and not doing 7000RPM clutch dumps you should be fine. You should really check out 3000GT/Stealth InternationalFor tons of info.

My two cents; I'd go with the Stealth. While not quite in the same category as the 951 or Stealth TT, I owned a Talon Turbo AWD a number of years ago when I lived in Vancouver. The AWD is VERY nice to have in poor traction conditions, such as the never ending rain in a typical Vancouver winter.

StealthAWD/3KGTVR4 is a f'n hog! There is a guy on the pelican parts BBS...blackfoot is his name...he has had a couple of 951's and had a 3KGTVR4 for a while...I would ask him how he would compare the two. Go here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/forumdisplay.php?s=c92153157bfec8bef84e4e2d717a549 e&forumid=10 , register (its free) and make a post titled something like "blackfoot...blah blah blah".
My personal opinion...Any car weighing at/around/over 4000 pounds should be badged a cadillac, lincoln, mercedes S class, bimmer 7 series, rolls royce or bentley. No car trying to pass itself off as a sportscar should weigh in at more than the klumps. A first gen eclispe GSX/talon TSI-awd is a much cheaper, more moddible, and less expensive to fix alternative (all though I don't think they are quite as sexy).
I have an all-trac celica...3S-GTE (MR2 turbo has the same) motor, much better AWD system than any of mistu's old offerings, rare, and very expensive to fix! The one time we have had an appreciable amount of snow in maryland since I have owned the car for over a year, it performed flawlessly, I had a ton of fun (check out a video of me trying to do donuts after most of the snow already melted: http://ribs.americainteractive.com/videos/donut1.avi ...it was a lot more fun eariler in the day when I could drift everywhere) and the only thing I had to do differently was to start braking sooner (and pull the ABS fuse). I'm not trying to knock DSM cars, but I have driven/ridden in AWD eclipses and 3KGT's and they weren't quite as capable as my toyota in the snow.
If you have a winter beater, definitely go for the 951. The stealth AWD has way too many toys stuffed into it (AWD, AWS, ABS, traction control, etc.) and if any of those break, you will be paying dearly. An '86 951 is IMHO the best year to get if you plan on modding it as it is the lightest and has a lack of gadgets (ABS, airbags) that I personally am not fond of. If you have no winter beater, consider picking up an old 4WD pick'em up truck along with your 951, or be stuck with a fast piggish touring coupe that can tackle inclimate weather but won't hang for **** in the turns if you go with the stealth year around.
Neither is cheap, but one will be a lot more fun for the majority of the year...think about it.
