WOTS THAT PIPE THEN?
On doing a belt job on my 944 I had to remove a pipe from the air filter to the timing cover, any ideas? I thought it might be to draw away dust caused by wear and tear etc from belts is this over engineering or what, but I LIKE IT !!

Yes it is.
Abandoned in later versions ('88 IIRC).
You can live without, holes need to be plugged then.

Yeah, it was removed in later cars. No real reasons why. Some speculate that it wasn't a good idea to allow unfiltered air and debris to pass into the belt area, while others thought the air flow would go the other direction. Some say it was designed to cool the belt area, some say it could cause catastrophic results if water were sucked up into the the air filter chamber (a real possibility on cars through 88 that have the snorkel in the fender) and then made its way into the belt area.
In any event most people have removed the hose and capped both ends. I bought caps at a dealer for about $3 a piece.
