I ran across a number I couldn't decode recently, I called PCNA who told me that the service manager of the local Porsche dealer could look this up. I called a dealer (Fred Lavery Porsche)but was forwarded to new car sales who pretty much told me to f* off. Those guy's are dicks. I'm awaiting a call back from another dealership, if I speak with them today, I'll ask them about your number.
P.S. I checked this site as well, but came up with nothing.

I think its in the "Classic 924/944/968" book. I can look it up for you when I get home. I think 231 is "gauges in english" or something like that.

I spoke with the service department at Hendrick Porsche today. They didn't have any idea what the option 231 was. I also inquired about option R36 found on the 1988 turboS for sale on ebay. They didn't have any idea what that one was either. I'm guessing R36 is a special paint code option...
