Default 924 Starting Problem

My friends 924 had a starting problem today. We quickly established there was no spark due there being no power to the coil (the +ive side of the coil was dead). I connected a wire direct from the battery to the coil and bingo! it started.

However, the problem then went away i.e. it would start without my hotwire. Any ideas? Some thoughts I had:

Is the ignition circuit controlled by a relay or is it direct from the ignition switch?
Does the standard 924 have some sort of security cut-off?

Your edification gratefully received.

Yes, I'd be suspicious of the ignition switch - not an uncommon failure mode.
