Red face HELP!---Cost of Header job 500 in labor!!!!!!!!

I currently have a cracked header so i asked my mechanic how much i would be to replace them. He said, excluding the price of the headers, it should be 400-500 dollars. That seems outrageous to me. Is that a reasonable price. Also i was thinking about either bursch or msds headers what would you recommend. I can't do the work myself because it is my only car. Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately for me, my stock headers developed a crack as well recently (132,000 miles). I took a peek at them and the previous owner had already welded them once so that ruled out another weld job for me. I ended up going with bursch headers through vertex.com. They had the cheapest prices I could find...but I hear paragon may carry them soon too. It took me about 3 hours to get the headers out and replace them. It's really not that labor intensive and you can easily do it yourself as long as you jack your car up about 14" or higher. If you figure your average mechanic in my area makes $80/hour...at 3 hours thats $240. Yeah, that seems a bit high....but the task looks a lot harder than it really is so he may be overestimating by a couple of hours.

I don't think there's any reason to go to a "good Porsche mechanic" for exhaust stuff. Places like Midas have been known to do a perfectly fine job .. our exhaust system is not that unique

Lutzam, are you done with finals yet? If you have the replacement headers, bring them on by, I'll help you replace them for free! In and out in about 2 hours, depending upon how much time I can take off other projects.

Yep,
In doing my engine rebuild I wanted to replace the cast iron boat anchors on the 84 motor with the lighter tube ones from the 87 924S motor that blew-up. Anyway Dad to the headers over to a muffler shop and had them welded-up. No big deal since there were already out if the car.

Just a note to express my admiration for the generosity and selfless nature of the fine gesture toward another Rennlister by "the guru" Danno.

Happy New Year! People like you make Rennlist what it is.

We have replacement headers which are much nicer then the factory and are made out of 304SS for only $995. Just a thought.

Danno, you should live on the east coast. The snow isn't that bad, really
