Shift Boot Install? Pics, this doesn't make sense...
http://picasaweb.google.com/bencaputo/ShiftBoot#
Links to my album. Installing new shift boot I got from egay before I know we had them for reasonable prices within the 944 community
Anyway, I am trying to do the final install. I don't see how I am going to stuff all the material in place and then get the center cap on. The center cap has 3 legs, can only go in one way, pretty straight forward.
Not only is this new boot thicker leather, but it is not cut (and it doesn't look like the rennbay one is either) for the three legs... so how are they supposed to hold everything down and go in? I guess the material that gets stuffed in should NOT block the holes for the clips... input really welcome

What I did was to rest the center cap on the shift **** and then use a small flat-head screwdriver to gently (don't want to scratch anything!) work the leather underneath the cap. Once it was all in there, I just pressed the cap down.

IIRC, I pushed as much leather into the opening as possible, pinned it in place with the cap, straightened the creases with a small screw driver and then pushed the cap down to its final position.

Well, it's 'on'... I use the term loosely... Because it's not flush, it's too thick, and well... f~ cheap cosmetic s~. Oh well.
I'll spring for a nice one soon or look for some one parting a car. =)
*edit*
Now it will not fit on the actual mounting point for the plastic boot holder... because the leather is too thick. SENDING BACK to seller, advising others to stay away...
Of course I bought this on the recommendation of a forum member who 'thought' this was the right seller where they got theirs... *argh*.

I shoulda told you how to do it when I was there instead of just saying it was a PITA..lol.. you seem to be on the right track if you break one of the tabs I have another insert for you. once the cap is on you will need to reverse the boot and put some contact cement on the handle...Call me if this is unclear

I got it on with marginal satisfaction, but once I put it on the retaining ring (was worried about breaking it, but took my time and got it), it could NOT snap into place because the base elastic and leather are too darn thick. Compared to the original, it's almost 3x thickness...

944online has them and they fit tight...and I am not using that term loosley..It was a PITA but it comes with full instructions on how to do the overlap and how to work the material. It is way thinner than the material that u are using. I did not think it was possible to get mine on but a little baby powder and some muscle and it fit very nice. You will need contact cement still though for the handle underneath

I can tell you that when I did mine I thought my thumbs were going to fall off. I worked that damned thing for 30 minutes to make it plyable and conforming enough to slap the stainless insert in without any buckles. I swear I couldn't type correctly for a week after that. Beware!

I got a replacement boot and polished aluminum cap from Rennbay. Very nice and the price was good...had it in 3 days I think.
I had it on in about 5 minutes (10 with the removal and re-installation of the console trim pieces). Just lined the slots in the shifter kob with the seams in the leather, and pulled it up and over...a little struggle near the top but nothing bad.Nice tight fit. Trimmed the edges at the top, tucked them down, centered the cap, put a soft cloth towel over the cap and hit it gently with a rubber mallet.

I bought the **** and boot from EagleDay pre-assembled, already done... it was $99... but it's FANTASTIC. It wildly exceeded my expectations, even at that price point. I think I need to remove my 'second' rubber stopper thing, but it installs SOOO Easily...
Makes my plastic cap look like @$$ though, I should get a metal one, but that's more $... =) My plastic also isn't 100% flush, I could probably have fit it a little more carefully, but I was just too damn excited... It looks and feels GREAT.
