Angry Why do cops have to be so bitchy sometimes?

Alternate title: No wonder so many people hate the police.

So my fiance and I are driving home last night down this really dark back road through the Cuyahoga National Forest. It is really really dark on a lot of sections of it and I tend to stick to the speed limit when driving on this stretch of road 1) because there are tons of deer and skunks and the like 2) because there are quite a few places where the man likes to hide and 3) because I just tend to drive slowly anyway.

So we are cruising along and I see what looks like somebody standing on the side of the road. Well, this didn't strike me as particularly odd since there are also a lot of cyclists and folk walking on this road. I suddenly notice this person has a small stop sign in their hand so I mash the brakes and come to a stop. There apparently was some kind of festival in one of the picnic areas and this police man was directing traffic out of the parking area.

Well, this car is coming towards us in the other lane and Johnny Law hold up his tiny little stop sign hoping this person will see it and stop. They finally do when they are right on top of the guy and he gives them what for for not stopping sooner.

It is then that I notice the following.

1) his tiny little stop sign is only about 12 inches across and is not reflective at all.

2) the little orange illuminated wand he has in his other hand is about as bright as a Zippo. It projects a white spot of light out of the end that is about as big as a silver dollar.

3) it is pitch black out and the road we are on (River View for those who know the area) is not lighted at all in this area

4) the cop, from Cuyahoga Falls, is wearing a uniform that is entirely dark blue or black with a small vest that has a 4-6 inch wide yellow relective band that doesn't really reflect too well.

Now I should have been able to see him as well as anyone since I have one of Iceshark's light cannon kits on my car but low and behold he is all but invisible until I am right on top of him.

So I pull up after he waved us on and I say to him, "you know, you are really, really hard to see" to which he replies, as he flashes his pinlight sized flashlight onto his non-reflective vest, "well maybe if you slowed down you wouldn't have a problem"

What a dick. I guess he assumed that just because I was driving a Porsche I was speeding.

So I let my frustration get the better of me and told him he was an ******* and drove off.

I suppose....some cops are really corrupt. there are a lot of great ones out there, too. I've been yelled at by a cop once for pretty much doing nothing. guy shut up when he found out my dad's rank. as bad as some can be, I get really agitated about the attitude towards ALL of them at Brown U. they get no repect for risking their lives every day. I've seen confrontations turned into race issuses where there was no base for it at all...I could cite specific examples and listed facts, but it doesnt rele matter here. they wont even give the "police" guns there but they expect them to make everything better. argh.... I think sometimes I'm jsut not liberal enough for brown ....I realize this is kinda off the topic of a subject already a little OT. that cop u talked to was an *** tho. sorry for the poorly constructed reply....watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force....I should never try to write anything serious while watching Adult Swim!

I don't mean to come off like I think all cops are dicks, especially since some of them are women

No really, I used to get along really well with the cops in Little 5 Points in Atlanta. They had a crappy beat in my opinion, what with all the homeless and drunks and stinky hippies and racial tension in that neighborhood. But whenever we had a problem at the bike shop, they were right there to help. Well, usually. There were a couple times they took forever to show up when I had to answer an alarm call late at night.

But this guy didn't have to be such a *****. I really can't even convey the attitude he was slinging when he made his little comment to me.

okay hold on. lets think about this for a second.

fatass has to stand all night in a park, instead of the doughnut shop, with a dinky little stop sign and fairy wand, and look like an idiot with a vest that barely fits his fat gut. then some guy in a car that is much nicer than his comes by to "politey" inform him that he is not very visible.

how would you feel???

no doubt he was a *****. if it were me i would have given you a ticket for stopping in a no stopping zone.

****ing cops!

One day I was driving on a two lane road when ahead of on top of a bridge seemed to be a police officer with a radar gun. He pulled me over and said "where are you going in such a rush". Well I replied that I am an assologist, he says "what the hecka is that?". I begin telling him that I slowly insert one finger at a time into a persons *** until I get my entire fist in there, then I do the same with the other hand, THEN I stretch it to about 6 feet. He says "what do you do with a 6 foot *******?". I replied you put him on a bridge and give him a radar gun. Sal

First off to all you people who think you say these witty remarks to cops to there face are full of crap. Maybe these small town hick cops dont have the gall to take action , but i promise you if anyone mouths off in the city they pay. It's a tough job..here anyway. So on behalf of the cop/rennlisters I'm not gonna let you white collar pencil pushers bad mouth a job you know nothing about, the things i see and deal with on a daily basis are unreal. I promise that most peeps would crap there pants if they walked a beat in brooklyn south. I just got in from work and I may be cranky...but i did the most important part i came home with the same amount of holes i went to work with. Now lets all drive our p-cars in peace...have a nice night

Hey JJmson, sorry you had a bad day. I think most people on this list appreciate how hard your job can be. The only witty remark to a cop in this post was "you know you really are hard to see". I fail to see how this is offensive.

Maybe a good solution would be to get all the traffic duty cops doing other work. Sure, they're needed to occationally direct traffic and clean up accident areas, but I think they would be more benificial if they walked around places on foot all the time. What are the odds that a place is going to get ripped off of John Law walks by at random intervals all day and all night? I think I recall some city trying this idea as a community involvement thing - as I recall it worked well.

I guess it all boils down to economics. If there aren't cops sitting there with radar guns (the most useless thing for a cop to be doing IMHO), then there isn't as much of a revenue stream coming in which means the city has to pay more to support the force which means that it gets cut back.

Personally, I'd be happier with the idea of slightly higher taxes (property taxes, perhaps) and no cops sitting around with radar guns or better yet, no patrolling/hiding traffic cops. Get them all doing more life and property protective work. Another good idea would be to get rid of the radar guys, not tell anybody, and put up those big signs that display your speed as you drive by... those usually slow people down since they think that there is going to be a cop down the street.

Munson,

I live on Long Island, and work in downtown manhattan. My travels take me through the bouroghs on a regular basis. A second grader at my wife's school in Rockaway crowned a teacher with a chair last week. If he did that at seven what will he do at twelve?

I see first hand the crap NY's Finest has to deal with, and would like to say:

Thanks, thanks for being there!
