968 damper plate repair

.....Friends 1993 968 automatic with trashed damper plate.
Does the trans and torque tube have to be removed/pulled back to install a new damper plate, or can the damper plate be installed through the bellhousing such as the regular clutch disk can be easily swapped on a manual trans 968? Is it a matter of going into the bellhousing, unbolting and moving a coupling back, to be able to change the damper without moving the main drivetrain parts out of the way?
