Called for an insurance quote for my car today! (B.C.) Highway Robbery!!!
I called today for an auto insurance quote today, I am planning on moving to BC which has a different system than other provinces in Canada, I think it is government regulated? Anyway because of this I cannot use my current insurance co. of 5 years. I was quoted a rate of $5000.00 per year. I am 29 y/o have been driving since 1989, with one claim in last 5 years (3 years ago). I currently pay $2200.00 here in NB. What do you guys think? Is there anyway around this? Should I just keep my cat registered and insured for NB and drive in BC on my NB plates and ins? Thanks.

Bad news, there is no way around it. I have tried to find one and my relatives work for ICBC and know all the angles. I have been using my Nova Scotia plates and insurance for the last 6 months but that is because I am officialy only on course in BC and my official res is still Nova Scotia. But that is going to change soon and will have to buy ICBC as well. Were you told that you can get a letter from your current insurance company in regard to you claim history that can be used to get a partial discount.

I'm 22 with 1 or 2 claims that were my fault, but under my mother's insurance.
When I insured the 951 under my name in october, they quoted me $2200 per year.
I pay something like $208 a month, for the 951.

Kinda reminds me when I started shopping for insurance for my "S". Started at 5k, 3k and down to 1.2k!
With my insurance company, it would be cheaper to insure a 86 turbo than my 88 S... In their books every 944 is n\a.
I'm afraid I'm not much help!

As Clint said, get a letter from your current insurance company with you claims history. (VERY IMPORTANT! BRING IT WITH YOU!!!) If you are a full three years without an at-fault claim, you can get a good discount (probably about 20%-30%). Ohter factors will be where you live, if you drive your car to and from work more than 6 days a month, how far you live from your work, etc. I pay about $2,000 a year for the 951 for pleasure use only, about the same for my '94 Dodge Caravan which is used to and from work. That price includes the maximum discount of 40%.

Jeez, I was feeling violated paying $646 USD a year because it is a couple dollars more than my wifes knew MBZ. I think I will stay on this side of the border a while longer as I was thinking of keeping my car at a place we have near Kingston Ont.

I just re-insured my 951 a couple weeks ago. With all my discounts (43%), roadstar rating, yadda yadda, my insurance last year was $1452. This year I went to renew, and it cost me $1902!!!! I still have the same discount and everything, but ICBC for whatever reason decided that I should be given a 30% rate increase!!!!!
I sent them a nasty email, and got some bullsh!t response, saying that the average rate increase this year was 4.7%, but it varied depending on type of car, horsepower, etc. What a bunch of crap. It's so nice being rewarded for having a good driving record.

You would think that the provincial government would want to promote immigration and the economy in BC, and would privatize the government insurance system, and make rates more competitive and to elimate the monopoly, and the dictator type insurance program. As a result of this I may have to rethink my move to BC, that will make one less tax paying, productive citizen to support there economy. Sheesh!

Here is my email from the insurance agent I received today [quote]Hi Kevin.Based on a 15% discount, your premiums break down as this:To & from work over 15 kilometers $1099.00.One million third party liability $192.00.Collision with a $ 500 ded is $2175.00 and comprehensive with a $500 ded is $704.00.Plate,license and registration fees are $89.00.grand total of $4442.00 for one year.A monthly pymnt would be $371.00.Welcome to B.C! If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me. Thanks,Kelley.

The funny thing is that my current policy has a liability premium of $1100 and in BC they want $198??? what is up with that? My current policy in NB has a collision premium of $780, and a TOTAL policy premium of $2200 per annum. I have been driving for 13 years (1989) have no claims in 3 years, and no other claims over 5 years, and no speeding tickets on my drivers abstract (they didn't even ask me about this when they gave me the quote) nor did they ask my age (29)

believe me, Vancouver has MANY great things going for it, that far outweigh crappy deals on car insurance. I've done quite a bit of travelling, and I feel incredibly lucky to live in Vancouver. BC is absolutely gorgeous, especially if you like the outdoors.

Call another Autoplan agent, and get another quote. Here, I'll randomly select some agents in Vancouver here for you to call:
Ron Dawson&Associates 604-435-8158
Sussex Insurance 604-872-7827
BCAA Insurance 604-268-5600
Call around, ask more than one company. They should all come up with the same number, seeing as they all sell ICBC insurance.
Also, there's a private insurance company called HSBC Canadian Direct, that apparently gives better rates than ICBC. My understanding is that the basic insurance is still covered through ICBC, but all the third party and everything else is done through them at better rates. Give them a call at 604-525-2115.
Let us know what you find out!!!
