Head stud length for '84 engine
How critical is the head stud length measurment ? When I replaced the head studs ( 60,000 miles ago)
there was no mention of measuring how much the new stud was screwded into the block. All the studs extend beyond the top of the head nuts when torqued down so I think everything is fine.
Just mulling over thoughts about why I may have had an early head gasket failure (45,000 miles) and now suspect more problems as coolant is being lost somewhere and the coolant sytem seems to pressurize after driving the car. There is no trace of oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil but no serious tests have been run yet.

How much are the studs poking above the nuts? You want something like 3-5mm. The studs shouldn't be screwed all the way down, only hand-tight to the correct depth. Usually a good idea to measure before removing the old ones....
