Remmmber, it was a little kart track, so the numbers on a conventioanl track would have been different favoring the 911's acceleration. But I'm fine with that. The 944 is giving a lot of value for the price and they're telling you it's an inherently better handling car than the 911. It just lacks the acceleration...and that's no surpise to any of us, right? Compare it to a stock or only chipped '86 951 and I think we'd be hearing a whole new story. And the 944T would STILL cost less!

That's why I would've liked to have seen that 944S2 in stock form against 'er. I actually expected the S2 to really beat the hell out of the SC.
I'm all excited now - have to re-read the article when I get home

Man the turbo tranny can't slow my car down by THAT much can it? I dont think they used much more than 2nd gear on that track thing anyways. As far as 0-60 goes the guy that was testing them said my car would have been in the 6's instead of 7.1 but he wasn't sure about the feel of my clutch and didn't wanna hard launch it and mess something up, which I do appreciate him doing. I only say that because on the track that 911 didn't out accellerate it by much. If it was a regular track they said the S2 would have taken them both pretty easily. This test was more like an AutoX test than anything.

I'm not so sure that on a full size track that the 911 would've beat my brother's car by a whole lot either. His 944 has had some serious suspension work done to it by the previous owner and it's obvious it was a track duty car.

All in all it was pretty fun getting to go along and see how they make things like this. The shots of the 2 cars on that back road had the photographer hanging on to the top of a motorhome to get the shots! It was just a bonus getting my car in there because it wasn't supposed to be when they planned it. They just decided kinda on the fly to include it.

Dave,

By all means, no - your car is awesome! I would've just liked to have seen how she would've done against the 911 with her stock transmission. I don't know how big of a difference it would've made, I was just interested in seeing how it would've stacked up.

The 911 and the S2 were pretty evenly matched, I just expected the S2 to walk all over it - I bet you're right though, on a longer track, the S2 would've been able to stretch out a bit more than the 911.

I've always thought your brother's car sounded like a winner as well

Also, his 0-60 was in the 7's if I remember correctly... do you remember hearing how hard the guy was launching her? Pretty nice of the GRM guy to not go ape on your clutch as well.

I dont know the other years offhand but looks at the specs on the 1986 944 Turbo and it will accelerate as fast or faster, corner as fast or faster, slalom as fast or faster, and stop as fast or faster than any other Porsche sold that year. I dont remember if the 911 Turbo was sold in 1986 or not (wasnt there a hiatus year in there?). Anyway, the flagship sportscar that year was a 944.

I also believe the 86 Turbo was the fastest production car in the world currently for sale in the United States that year.

Mid 80s 911s and 928s dont scare me at all. In fact I look at them and see lunch.

He said he wasn't really hard launching any of them because obviously he didn't want to hurt any of them. But when he came back after doing mine he said he didn't have a real good feel for my clutch so he was especially light on it. Given that it was also 95 degrees and 100% humidity outside, the times on all the cars might have been lower under better conditions.

I was also pretty surprised by how quick that 911 was. I don't remember if it was stock or not as far as motor goes because if I remember correctly it was a customer's car and the guy who brought it was a mechanic who had just finished putting the engine back in the night before this test after doing some work to it.

Hey Dan-
I'm with ya on the 911 looking dated in those photos! Would have looked a million times better without the tail, and with either black Fuchs or modern twists, etc! Blue with gold BBS looking wheels is too disco for me!

Good read.. typical of GRM by my experience. I still really like the 911 styling (though I much perfer narrow-body without a tail) - good thing the GF's demanding (and financing) the purchase of one...

Here's what pissed me off about that article when I first read it-----

"The 944 is clean and attractive, but is nothing to write home about. It just doesn't shout "I'm a Porsche." Instead, it says "I'm a mid-priced sports coupe," and it frankly looks a lot like a second-generation Mazda RX-7"

WTF??? Don't these guys realize that Mazda BLATENTLY copied off Porsche when they designed the RX7, so much so that they spent a lot of the time at the unveiling of it comparing it to the 944???

This article p1ssed me off, and I threw it in the trash after reading it. Very typical of un-researched, un-edited GRM crap. Flame away.

Guess that's another way to look at that statement of theirs... I agree - it doesn't scream 'Porsche!' to the uneducated (it sure didn't to me when I first saw one labeled... I'm sure I've seen dozens before that and never even got a FIRST glance.) And it DOES look like a 2nd Gen RX7 - we all agree... and a 2nd Gen RX7 looks EXACTLY like a "mid-priced sports coupe" because... it is.

I don't see any grounds to stand on for flaming GRM - just a couple different ways to read what they wrote. As for un-edited... I kinda like my reading a little rough. Better to have stew (unedited) than puree (edited to go down smoothly, blandly).

Not defending them, because the world would be a really farqing bland place with difference of opinion.

I thought it was a pretty good read. I think the real difference between the 911 and the 944, is that anybody can be that fast in the 944. I'll keep my 944 for now.

I think it would be more accurate to say that the 2nd generation RX7 looks like a 944, not the other way around. (We all know who imitated who...)

That said, when I see a 944 my mind says "Porsche." For lack of a better phrase, there is "Porsche DNA" all over the place: the low, purposeful stance, windshield angle, flared fenders - and the wheels of course.
