Default would cutting out spare tire area allow me to remove the torque tube?

Sorry about all the threads but I'm all stressed out over fixing this car in a hurry as it's my only car.

I managed to move my coupler today and the tq tube is infact damaged. the teeth are rounded off and don't look like the trans side. Anyways trans is still in the car as I could only slide the coupler on the tq tube side and it won't clear now.

I'm pretty low on time with school and work so I need a really fast method to fix my 944 or else it'll end up being a parts car or junk. I have spent a lot of money on repairs and maintenance over the years and it is in pretty good condition and I'd rather not scrap it.

I was wondering if I cut out a section of the spare tire area would the tq tube slide out without having to drop the rear suspension or would it still not clear?

if this does work then it'd save me a ton of time and I can get the car running again but I don't want to start chopping up my car for no reason.

well not 100% sure. All the teeth on the torque tube are there but it definately does not look like the trans side. the trans side the teeth are ^ shaped, pointy at the top. the torque tube end the teth look more flat at the tops and looks much shorter to me.

It takes a few minutes to lower down the damn rear suspension far enough to remove the torque tube. The answer is not cutting up the damn car.

I thought you're suppose to remove the whole rear suspension which is a lot of work

It is more work but the alternative is like cutting the front end off the car to remove the engine. Do it right or sell the car and get a Honda. If you are not sure about what you are looking at, take a picture and post it. It takes time to read your post and respond to it so lets do us all a favor and follow directions of people who have done this many many times.

well the thruth is I was going to sell the car in a year because I'm moving to another province for school in about a year and I can't take the car with me.

anyways I really need another car for the next 12 months. if I work on this car for another few months it's kind of pointless.

if I sell it as a whole like this I probably wouldn't get anything for it.

I've probably put 4 grand in repairs /maintenance into it since I bought it 2 years ago and i paid 4100 for it 2 years ago....

I only have a coupler hours a week now to work on it so it will be very slow progress.

You either have to have money or time and skill. If you have neither, you pretty much can't afford the car. Your only option is really to sell it for what you can get and take the bus or buy a $500 honda from the way it sounds. Local impounds around where I am has plenty of running cars taken from unlicensed drivers (illegals). Many are "reliable" cars for $500.

don't think i'd get more than a 1000 bucks for a car that needs major work and I've spent about 8-9 grand on the car inclucing purchase price.

right now I'm stuck because I can't get the trans to clear. Once I get the trans out I might tow the car to a shop to have the clutch and torque tube changed. but I have to get the trans out first as it's already disconnected now and I want to inspect the tq tube teeth.

well I still have the tranny couldn't get it off cus it's stuck on teh coupler (moved the coupler to the tq tube side).

I'll take pics when I can and post them. aren't the teeth on the tq tube suppose to look the same as the the trans input shaft.

like I said the teeth on the trans are sharp and v shaped ^, while the torque tube the teeth are shorter and more rounded looking.

I cut the wheel well area on my first parts car not knowing what I was doing. Try moving the coupler back to the trans side and you should have enough clearance. I had the same problem you're having and couldn't understand why. There should be plenty of room on the trans input shaft for the whole coupler. EMail me at APartAbove@aol.com and I can try to help more.

the coupler wont slide enough towards the TT side to clear, you gotta do it towards the trans

^ thanks TNT

I had a hell of a hard time getting that coupler to budge. and now that it is on the torque tube side it's going to take a hell of a lot of smacking with a pickly fork and big *** hammer to get it to budge again.

it would not budge at all to move onto the trans side so that's why I tried the tq tube side.

now the trans is basicly disconnected from everything and supported by a jack and only think holding it to the car is the coupler.

also that shfiter tube would not slide out when i was lowering the trans.

Try this.

Put the tranny mount bolts back on, if its early then both, if late not sure? (forgot if its early or late) not all the way but enough to support the weight.

The what I always do is I take an adjustable wrench with a long handle, and make it big enough to clear the TT but closed enough to push on the coupler. Then wedge it up the main viewing hole, and pivot it right on the edge of the main viewing hold, slamming the wrench to push the coupler towards the trans. I remeber you said that one side of the coupler was still tight, it may still be holding a bit. Just lots of brute force and yu should get it.
