Default Cutoff for Sealed / Non Sealed front struts

I've been searching the site trying to find out whether my 85.5 NA needs sealed or non sealed front struts. Some posts state that the changeover was 1987 models and others state 1986 (isn't a 1985.5 identical to a 1986?). I want to put in a set of Koni's but want to make sure I order the correct fronts. The rears are going to be replaced too but the part numbers are the same for an 85 early / late and not an issue.

All the NA's through 86 with standard suspension had the strut case with a threaded cap allowing replacement of the insert only and that includes Koni inserts. I'm not familiar with the M030 option for the same years so maybe that package is sealed. The 86 Turbo was the 1st sealed case AFAIK.

My 1987 was built 11/86 and had sealed struts from the factory. You may find it cheaper to do the modification yourself if you do have sealed struts. It definitely increases your options.
