944 running problem
I have searched the forums but I am not sure what to look for, so here is the post.
I have an 89 944 about 90000 miles. I was driving it the other day and about 90 minutes in to the drive the engine just lost power. I pulled over. The engine would not rev above 1800 rpms. anytime I reved the engine or tried to drive it would just lose power and take a few seconds to recover. The car never died but it made it impossible to drive home. I could shift at low rpm all the way to third gear and the second the engine hit 1800 rpms loss of power even with the gas peddled floored. No mods of the car and I just filled the tank with 89 octane (middle of the road) gas. Any help or if needed more info would be available...I just don't know how to describe other than to say that it was like flooring the engine then letting go then flooring it again then letting go.
Could this be a fuel pump issue? or what?

After sitting for about 30 minutes it ran fine again but I was not going to rink driving down the interstate again. I did look under the hood but saw nothing wrong although I am not a mechanic. I forgot to mention that the engine would backfire also at times during the event or occurrence.

it was coming from the engine compartment...reminded me of when my 911sc would pop the pop-off valve...a loud POP!
I was behind the wheel so I am not sure where the noise came from besides saying it was from the engine compartment.
