Default Missing Speedometer sensor

Just got a new 85.5 and the speedometer wasn't working. Thought it would be a quick fix. Bought a new speed sensor, and climbed under the car to change it today. Needless to say, I was surprised to find the electrical plug not plugged in, and suspended above the transmission with a tie strip. I looked down to see a rubber cap filling a large whole on the left side of the transmission. I am guessing that this is where the speed sensor would go IF I HAD THE RIGHT TRANSMISSION in the car. I am now thinking that a PO changed the transmission and used an early 944 one, without the mechanism to hook up to the speed sensor. Is this a possibility? Would an early transmission be fully compatible with an 85.5 except for the speed sensor capability? Can the transmission be retrofitted with whatever is needed to get my speedo working? Wondering if anybody knows the answers to these questions - pissed off at PO about this.

got under the tranny again, and it definitely looks like I was had. The tranny must be an early edition, before they used speed sensors instead of the speedometer cable. Now I am wondering if my engine is original or a replacement from an early car....

You're possibly missing the impulse sender that goes there...

Any way to get the code off the top of the transaxle?

no, I guess I am stuck with what I've got. I went out and bought a small GPS with an MPH guage that I'll have to use to make sure I don't get a ticket. I have the sender unit. I had already bought a new one, before I realized my situation. I can't get to the top of the transaxle, but I am 99% certain that there is no place for the speed sending unit to mount to. I've been checking some good picture I found in the forums. Thanks for the help, though. Wondering if I have a replacement engine from an early car now.

See where the sender is? No dice on location on yours?

Secondly, number is on top of bellhousing -- you should be able to get a mirror up there...

Probably not. Transmissions (especially in your 85.5) are regular points of failure for these cars. More than likely a previous owner blew his and replaced (or had it replaced) it with the incorrect trans.
