Post 944 transaxle - weight balance (COG'ish)

If the subject makes no sense to you, I agree

While I've removed the transaxle a few times in the past using the muscle of 2 others and a jack to balance, I'd like to build a tranny rig to mount to my floor jack. I've done this before with other cars, but it's vital to know the absolute center of balance.

So, I'm just trolling here... but, does anyone have a good reference point for the absolute cener of balance for the tranny?

Looks like I'll swapping these out regularly, so might as well make it easy on myself, eh. (sad cruel facts of life)

Thanks!

You can buy a universal transmission adapter for a floor jack at your local Gi Joes (this is where I got mine). Sadly, I could not get the back of my car up far enought to roll the floor jack under with the transmission on it.

I wish I could help you Skip, but it's a little out of my league. I'm curious though- do you know how much the transaxle weighs? Does the Turbo S trans weigh more than the regular Turbo, and it, more than the 944NA? I'm wondering b/c the Turbo S is supposed to have several mods over the normal Turbo, as well as shot peened 1st & 2nd, and, the 968 is supposed to be beefier and much stronger than the Turbo S- it has the extra gear too, and is supposed to be a decent amount heavier. Don't ask where I've been getting all of this- it's come to me in various ways If you don't know, and you probably think I'm nuts for asking to begin with, would you know of any places I could go (online or other) to find out?

Thanks,
Robby

Tabor: partly the reason I am fabbing my own... so I can make it as low as possible to reduce the need for vehicle height. I can get it up to ~24" normally ( )... maybe higher with some ingenuity. The factory was nice enough to leave their mounting tabs for me to use.

Robby: No idea really... I was hoping for that answer also. I will probably have to ship one in, since there seem to be none local to me. Will let you know. I can't imagine there's too much difference in the weight of trannys over the years... maybe in the 968 models it's a bit heavier. The open diff and LSD are similar in weight, and the oil cooler/pump equipped models are not much different.

Roughly under the shift linkage.

Skip: The Kirkland costco has a motorcycle jack for less than $100 that would make a good base for a tran jig. I pulled a couple of transmissions in my garage using a add on tran jig (from tool town)on my 2 ton jack. The setup was way too tippy with the narrow jack. The costco jack with a much wider wheel base appeals to me. Let me know if you need any crude welding. --Roy--

Measured on my spare tranny (no LSD/no cooler):
- 14 cm ( app 5,5 inch) behind the center of the CV (diff output)
This is close to Dave's "Roughly under the shift linkage".
The LSD would move it forward for (guessed) max 1 inch, probably less.
