Post Will Blaupunkt PCxi462 4x6" speakers fit in the front doors?

...of a 1986 944.... Top mount depth of 1 11/16", bottom mount depth 1 15/16"

Or will I have to opt for the PCxt462? Top mount depth of 1 5/8", bottom mount depth of 1 15/16"

I just put the pcxi (overdrives) in my '89. Easy install and good sound. If you save the little grey donut spacers off your stock speakers the stock grills will pop right on. Use a little shim between door and speaker if they don't want to stay on.

Gray spacers? Tell me more about this install, I'm interested in these speakers. The magnet doesn't come in contact with the door metal behind? Does the tweeter protrude at all? How much pwoer do you have going into them?

In my car there were little 7mm dia 2mm thick (similar to plastic washer) spacers between the stock speaker and the door screw holes. You'll see them when you take it off. I just have a 2 year old 4x45w JVC HU driving them, nothing fancy but I'm sure a bit more juice would make them come alive. I'm not sure if the magnets touched the track for the window or not but you should have a bit of clearence if the inner door structure is the same. Tweeter does not intrude.

Hm...All I've got are those rubber boot things...Maybe I lost mine.

I'll add this to the list of speakers that definately fit...of which there are two.

they should both work. I have heard great things about the PCxt462, but that is just what I have heard. most of the blaupunkt line will fit are cars. Blaupunkt was OEM for porsche during this time, and most of the newer speakers still have the same from and fit. the only problem would be the depth, esp top mount. you can only top mount speakers in the front, bcs there isn't alot of depth.

I think you're talking about the late model snap-on type grills, right? I don't know what year Porsche started using these, but I know '86 and previous don't have them.

I'm also interested if the 1 11/16" deep speakers will fit so I don't have to use the lesser (more ricey?) Blau's. I've heard that these blau's come with spacers in addition to grills. But it seems like you still run the risk of running into the dash if you use spacers.

This stereo stuff is getting tiring, I feel like just going to the local car stereo shop, handing them my visa, and saying "Make it work."

I bet they could...

Yes mine are the later model grills, but I would think they would be easy to source. Or just go get the Radio Shacks for $15 and pitch the speakers. The Blaus did come with a spacer but I think they only work with the Blau grills which would hit the dash.

lol, no kidding....I have thought the same.

The local car stereo guys have raved about MB Quart 4x6" speakers. They say that they are just the best sounding 4x6's available. But all the time I am thinking, "Yeah, but they won't fit a 944." The local shop charges $100 for the MB Quarts, plus $45 to install. But again, I doubt they would even be able to successfully install.

We pretty much know the Blaus will fit...they cost about $50....and it will be a plug n' play install. So I am leaning towards the Blaus (PCxi - they look to be a little better quality than the PCxt).

If anyone else has installed these (or the MB Quarts, for that matter), please chime in!

I have the radioshack grills, and they hit the dash pretty good. Sure the door closes, but I have a pretty good impression of the speaker grills on the side of my dash where they touch.

I'd imagine the late model grills must at least touch the dash, unless the later model cars have slightly different doors/dashes. There is really no free room between the dash and the door when it closes (at least not enough to seemingly allow for a spacer.)

Sean - I had MB quarts in my last car, they were lots of fun. Call me shallow, but somehow getting german speakers (either blau's or quart's) for my german car just seems "right."

I believe I have about 3mm of clearence between grille and door. I agree with Dax- all other things being equal, (sound, $, etc) I'd have to go for the german made units.

As I understand it, the 85.5+ dashes hinder speakers more than the early cars.

I have the Blau PCxt462's in the rear of my car, and Kenwood KFC??? somethings in the fronts. The spacers that came with the Blaus are mounted between the speakers and door panel on the Kenwoods which allowed me to re-use the stock grills/fasteners with no gaps between panel and grill and no interference between grill and dash.

The PCxi's will fit in the doors and in the rear. I have them in my 86 with the factory grills in place. In the doors, they mounted without any problems or spacers. On the back of the factory grill there is a oval plastic ring molded in. To get the grills to fit, I took my dremel and removed this ring. They work great and fit perfect after the dremel work.

Later,
Rob
