Question How do I remove base on 968 Mirrors?

I want to take the base off the tear shaped part of the 968 mirror. There is some "funky" sort of connector which keeps the base attached. This is where the spring is located that causes the mirror housing to "snap" back when turned. How do I disconnect the two parts for painting?

Also, anyone have a burned out mirror motor from the 968? I need to replace the white toggle on the top of the motor on one of mine.

TIA,
