Default steering rack test

I would like to know if there is a good way to check the condition of a steering rack out of the car. Where should I look for play..etc? I have an extra one but I don't know if it's good or not...

Thanks

Well - on rack itself the failure is usually just seals causing leaks. The joints covered by the accordian rubber can go bad - you can tug on the ends and see if there is any play.
