...ever gotten your ABS to kick in at (assuming you have ABS)? Even if your 944 doesn't have ABS, then do you have any expreience w/other cars that have had it- if so, what is your highest speed in them (that you invoked the ABS)?
I ask this b/c I've heard it both ways- some say a car lifts as it goes faster and some say it's the opposite. OBVIOUSLY, it depends on the car, but, many people are under the impression that most newer cars actually have a little more downforce the faster they go- those who say that, say that contend that since the wheels have more traction, they are harder to lock up at high speeds, therefore making ABS more difficult to invoke- makes sense- if the wheels don't lock, then ABS won't engage. I talked w/someone awhile back, who should have had some experience w/some pretty fast cars, who said that there are very few modern cars (performance, etc) that have strong enough brakes to actually lock up the tires (w/decent modern tires) much above 100mph, and that IF your car COULD actually invoke the ABS at say, 120mph, then you have incredible brakes- again, assuming you had decent tires, AND, yes, I am talking about good DRY roads in decent shape...
Any input? I'd love to hear some stories- especially from those of you who have lots of track time- Danno- does your 951 have ABS?
Thanks,
Robby

The rest of this post is just a story, so if you don't have time, then don't bother reading it- the point of this post is really just the question above....
Last night, I was in the fast lane, gaining (quickly) on another car, who was directly in front, w/no one near him in the slow lane. He started to move over when I got closer to him- he was doing ~50mph- I had dropped down to ~75mph- when I saw he was getting over, I got back on the gas, to get my speed back up to a more reasonable 80-85mph
(considering the lack of traffic). When I got to w/in several feet of him, he starts back over! <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> I stepped on the brakes HARD- definately over 80mph (just barely)- the ABS kicked in, the car slightly wiggled as I pulled a HAIR to the left to make more room- there was a cement wall (they've been doing construction there for over 5yrs)! I really can't believe I didn't make contact w/him, OR the wall, OR BOTH!!! I swear he didn't even NOTICE! He continued to swerve back and forth (after I'd gotten back in behind him) until I decided to go around on the other side- he HAD to be drunk....

Thanks guys- I had a feeling ABS would kick in at such speeds- now maybe NOT w/slicks on all fours, but, I DO remember the C&D acrticle where about 8 cars were tested (by the late Don Shroeder) from 0-150-0. The overall fastest was a Lingenfelter ZR-1 b/c of it's INCREDIBLE 0-150 time (a hair above 15 seconds!), and, damn good brake distance (~715ft), and of course, time. A Hennesey Venomm Viper was next- what the hell happened to THAT guy?
The best BRAKING car, though, was an automatic Renntech Mercedes convertible that weighed over 4200lbs! It stopped from 150 in under 700ft! (~690ft) Incidentally, in case no one is familiar w/Don Shroeder (I believe he was senoir tech editor for C&D and he was an incredible test pilot) he was killed while testing a Renntech Mercedes at very high speeds. Anyway, he wrote about the testing process, and said that it HAD to be done in ONE run (no piecing together of a cars best accel run w/it's best brake run) and HE drove all the cars (I've been told it was shown on Speedvision-?). He said he would go all out, after several practice runs. Just before 150 (~149, since the speedos are supposed to e slightly delayed- I believe they used radar to comfirm) he would center the car over the center yellow line and he would slam on the brakes- he said timing was crucial, and that if the clutch wasn't hit at EXACTLY the same time as the brake, that the engine would keep the car from slowing down as fast as it could have- which made the Mercedes auto all the more impressive. He said the cars w/ABS had an advantage, as they could be stepped on, and would find the threshold quicker- this is why the Vipers didn't fare NEARLY as well, and only stayed competitive b/c of their incredible acceleration... I say this b/c he must have been able to invoke the ABS at such speeds, or he probably wouldn't have mentioned this... Anyway, I hope some more people will have some input on their fastest ABS speeds- I will hopefully get a chance to run some higher speed tests soon, but it's difficult to do safely w/out being on a track, so I'm in no hurry to rush it...
