That looks like one of two things, both of which are on my car but neither in that position:
1) Old diagnostic plug that you wouldn't be able to hook anything to nowadays (no worries).
2) Oxygen sensor connector (worries).

I've had the car for several years with no problem. If it was an oxygen sensor something would've gone wrong by now. I guess the diagnostic suggestions are correct.

that piece you are looking at is not used, it is not the o2 sensor plug...if you follow it down, it goes on the drivers top of the bell housing to read a pin on the flywheel. the plug end that is in the pic should be bolted to the lift ring on the back of the cam housing. you can take the sensor off because it was use with an old piece of equipment called a sun machine that would plug into the sensor to read top dead center...found the part # 91160610800 sensor for top dead center...
the 911 carrera in the 80's had one as well...

I agree with Vincent, Thats the diag connection for the Reference sensor for TDC, I removed it from my 924S not good for anything but getting in the way. That is the first time I have seen it bolted in that location. You can remove it or leave it be. Its old technology that no one uses anymore

It looks like its part, or was part, of the cruise control line. Just a guess but I believe thats right where it routes.
EDIT: I agree with everyone else now, im pretty sure its how Porsche found TDC.

I have had the engine out of my -89 2,7 liters for 5 years now. Have heavily scored #1 & 3 cylinders and and have recently installed another engine i bought from England.
I have also found that grey cable coming from the third sensor on the bellhousing and thought it was the connector to the oxygen sensor - but it did not match. Now i know what it is for :-)
But - i can`t find any connector for the oxygen sensor, where is the connector placed ?
