Question 944 Engine and Transmission Placement

I'm a new memeber to Rennlist and was wondering were the engine in front and transmission in back setup origninated from? Did Porsche come up with this idea? Is the 944 the only vehicle made with this setup or have other manufacturers tried this?

The 928 and 924 had it too. IIRC they were not the first road cars with this setup and it was seen on race cars before that.

Ferrari 275 GTB, GTS, 330 GTC, GTS, 365 GTB/4 Daytona (all from 1964-73, and what lovely cars!!) and Pontiac Tempest about 1962-3 all had transaxles, Alfa Romeo GTV from mid seventies too so it isn't a Porsche Idea.
