Okay....this is probably impossible, but I thought I'd ask you more knowledgeable guys.
Is it possible to mount a flat-6 boxer engine (ie. the Boxster S 252 HP powerplant) in a 944?
I've heard of people making all sorts of unusual engine modifications and transplants (can you say Porschevy?
) , but have never heard of this one.

Of course, anything is possible, but whether it is reasonable is a whole other ball game. I would imagine that the boxster engine would be a tight fit in between the strut towers. Also the modifications to the drivetrain would be quite a bit of work. It would, however, be an interesting way to lower the CG.

Well, I guess ANYTHING is possible. But why the hell would anyone want to do that? For the amount that'd cost, you could just go out and buy yourself a Boxster. The $/hp on that one would be completely ridiculous.

different type of engine (boxer vs inline), but anything is possible. one would usually ask, "is it possible to put a 996 engine in a Boxster?" but that's better posted elsewhere.
<a href="http://www.autofarm.co.uk/car.php3/Boxst.html" target="_blank">http://www.autofarm.co.uk/car.php3/Boxst.html</a>
and some faqs:
986 vs. 996 Engine
The Boxster and the 996 have different bore and stroke because a different crank is used. The engine casing of the 996 in the area of the crank has been beefed up considerably to accommodate significantly increased torque and horsepower. Also, they use a totally different intake and exhaust systems. Although based on the same basic engine design, the 986 and 996 engines are significantly different from each other. The 986 transmissions would not hold up to the power and torque generated by the 996 engine, nor would the 986's rear suspension pieces. You cannot bore the 986 engine block. The LOKASIL liner prevents it. The Porsche Boxster Service Tech Manual, page 1-6 says:
To reduce the wear along the cylinder sleeves to a minimum, a production method was chosen whereby a highly porous sleeve (25% silicon and 75% air) is cast directly into the crankcase

With regard to the 996 to 986 transplant, that's the source of this 986 to 944 question.
Recently people have begun placing the new 3.6L 996 engine into Boxsters. The Boxster S has the same 6-speed transmission as the 996, so the transplant is pretty smooth. (The main catch, I'm told, is the increased height of the 996 powerplant - but aftermarket tuners like Roock have apparently successfully confronted the issue).
If I were to place a 3.6L engine in my Boxster S, that would leave a spare 3.2L flat-6 engine. I was just curious if it could be mounted in my 944. It would be an interesting (although probably unwise) project!

Actually the answer is yes!! I think,
I know that a chevy v8 has been mid engine mounted in 944(basically made the car like a lotus) and the car runs 9sec 1/4's

I'd try anything but you have the tape measure, have a good measure up of the engine bay, torque tube conversions are easy as you can cut and shut bellhousings and use center release bearings on 944 hydraulics, at first the swap seems crazy even for me but if you have the car and the engine then go for it, at worse you will have a ruined bellhousing and possible a bill for around $100 for a flywheel spun to a 911 crank boss. Probably worth the effort unless you can sorce an engine off a local racer that has wiped his/her car out and wants a quick sale.

That car is mean. I still have the site.

you should post it for us trevor..
i'm just think that the impossibility of a 9two-eight engine fitting in a 9four-four without fab work is more interesting. but that subject has been beaten to death already.

sean: save your engine and just get a old, cheap 911 rolling chassis and go for it..

Put the 3.2 in a 914 ! That would be scary. There is one with a 928 engine in it so almost any swap is possible if your wallet can handle it.
