No question, the 951 is much prettier in my eyes. One of the reasons I wanted one. Sure there were a myriad of reasons but looks was definitely one. Not so with the WRX (or even maybe an EVO). I once bought a puke green Acura b/c it was a great car -- even though I hated the looks of it. It was a great car though and worth the visual misery (at the time).

well this is quickly turning into a flame war, what a surprise

you can certainly not like the car, I think its ugly too, but to say its made for dirt roads is just plain ignorant. have you ever watched the WRC, around half their events are on tarmac. WRC cars are probably the most well rounded race cars on the planet. for everyone who wants to bash the WRC-type cars, just drive one before you open your mouth, it might just change your opinion. I know that my car is not the same one out there at WRC events, I'm not that stupid, but my car (or very close) is out there competing in SCCA Pro Rally, Club Rally, Pro-Solo, Solo-II, USTCC and a whole lot of other places. Just because it has four doors and a back seat does not preclude it from being a very competent sports car. I could care less what my car looks like, I'm a performance oriented person, I've never done anything to any of my cars that hasn't in some way made it perform better, but if looks are your bag then by all rights you have the EVO beat.

Mark- "EVO's of the past have been some of the best handling/performing cars in the world. They are not just a sedan with some badging"

Yeah, the tests I've seen have shown some amazing stats- test pilots have said impressive things too- I think an EVO would be an awesome everyday car. I only dislike the Lancer's right now b/c they are so damn weak- I wouldn't be able to stand it, knowing the are 270HP ones exist...

Doyle- "...but for 30+ grand it's not worth
it to me..."

Several have mentioned their relative bargain- compared to 944/951s, it's really no contest (new vs new)- $30K isn't much higher than the avg priced new car today- it's almost entry level price now. Cars w/1.8L Audi T start ~$21K & are about the best BFT$ for enthusiasts besides WRX (wonder what the STi will run?)- a loaded A4Q 1.8LT, w/Sport opt is ~$28K. Maxima's, 350Z's, etc are pushing, or slightly above $30K. I STILL like the VI more than the VIII since looks are important too, IMO. A major factor value-wise is how scaled down the US EVO will be. BTW- I'm NOT knocking you at all- most of this stuff is just opinion anyway & it's fair for you to say the EVO is NOT worth $30K to YOU- I'm just saying that $30K, considering it's PERFORMANCE, is a decent value for the current market- I'm not really sure it's worth $30K to me either (if I even HAD $30K)- I'd probably rather go $10K deeper into debt & go for an S4 due to it's chipped performance AND looks- both inside & out...

Bryan- "...slightly less power for the US Lancer Evo, no active center diff, no active yaw control, no 6-speed (5-speed only), and a different front bumper..."

That changes things- removing the 6-sp sucks, and even worse, the active center diff- not too sure about the AYC- SOUNDS like it would be cool to have- especially if one can defeat it if/when they want...

Marcus- "euro spec Evo does 0 to 60 in about 4.5 secs...I guess losing the AYC is going to make a fair impact on the car's handling though..."

4.5 sounds about right- as I said in my previous book...I mean...reply, the EVO VI ran the 1/4 in the high 12's- that's pretty consistent w/high 12's to low 13's...

Larry Parker- "...You are getting alot of performence for the money!!!!!!! MY S2 cost 45k in 1989 and it cant do half the **** an evo can...

Who givse a **** if its not a PORSCHE...Anyone that says its not interesting because its not a porsche if a FOOL!!!!!"

I tend to agree w/these comments- the EVO (at $30K) is a great BFT$, AND, if Porsche made the ONLY interesting cars worldwide, we'd be in trouble...

Jaime Diaz- "...I just love fast cars, all shapes and forms... just some more that other..."

Nice list- I'd have to add Corrado's- particularly '93 & '94's, since the interior was changed, and, there was no confusion on which engine- always the VR6- late 93's & up even went ditributorless. I like some of the older VW's, like 16v Sciroccos, GTi's, etc, too,. as well as other cars like RX7TT, ALL 911's of ANY type, etc....

UDPride- "...So I compare a Porsche to a bouey knife and a WRC car to a Swiss Army knife. Completely different. And to think the 951 can still hang with cars coming off the assembly line today is an engineering feat..."

Good analogy actually...

mouse [CTY]- "...I've got one: IT LOOKS BETTER. Design. Does that count? "

I have to agree w/this one- the EVO VI was much better looking then the EVO VIII IMO, but I'm still not sure that even IT was a nice looking as a 951- one of my favorite things about the 951 is it's INTERIOR! It could use a few details to dress it up, like Perry951's LED lights, etc, but, I've always HATED most American cars interiors except for some of the classics, etc. I think the 951 has a nicer interior than Japanese cars, as well, and many other types- I like it better than Boxters & new 996's- the layout, design, etc- I just think it all looks good & flows well, etc...

spidey- "...well this is turning into a flame war- what a surprise"

Actually I haven't ever watched WRC so you very well may be right, but you can't ignore the fact that these cars were designed as all terrain vehicles. Which is one of the things I like about the car, in a place where it snows (where I live) an AWD car is pretty practical, and a sports car with AWD means you're not limited to just SUVs. But some people don't need or want that car. You are open to that fact, Larry was not. I was responding to him completely shutting out the possibility that someone might actually value different things in a car.

I have driven my friend's Impreza, it is very fun to drive-- It seems much more smooth compared to my 944 S, and more responsive on the gas. But I still like the feel of my car better, everything just feels tighter to me on my car, and I like that. Plus, I LOVE the way my car looks. I walk backwards away from my car whenever I park it. I do not see myself doing that with these cars.

And I respect that. I was never bashing the EVO or any other WRC car. I was saying why I do not like it...I guess that could be seen as bashing, but I realize why other people like these cars. Some people might even like the way these cars look, and that's great if they do. I was responding to Larry's narrow-minded "EVO is better in every way and anyone who thinks otherwise is CRAZY" comment that everyone seemed to be agreeing with.
