Post Tranny rebuild - MD area?

Hey all, haven't been around here for a long time (not that I was ever super-active), mostly lurking recently. My dad and I have a 944S we bought as a project car a few years ago. We finally have the engine running well, so the time has come to fix the tranny.

Can anyone recommend a good place either to get a rebuilt tranny (Vertex?), or better yet someone in the area that can do it? It has a lot of slop, and the 3rd gear synchro is broken (literally - we took the gear carrier off, and the synchro ring is split in two).

I'd really like to do the rebuild myself, but I have never tried it, and without finding a "mentor" (volunteers??) it sounds like a pretty huge undertaking. Thanks for the help...

Seems a lot easier to just get a used one from a yard. My local mechanic says it's way more expensive to rebuild and there are lots of good ones available out there.

Big E:

It is less expensive and quicker to find a used one. I have one for sale. But...a rebuilt unit should be good for many many more miles, and you have piece of mind that everything is fresh.

Look up Kevin Gross. kgross@connact.com. That is an old email address. He rebuilds them and is in Connecticut, I think.

Also, Albert Broadfoot in Jacksonville, FL does them too. There are others.

I have had all my work done from Ralphs auto. He specializes in Porsches. Great guy and I highly recommend him. He is in Riesterstown. 410 526 2500.

Cignatta Motor Werks is also a big Porsche guy around here. Been in business a long time, but I have never had any work done by him, just a PPI on my old car. This is where the new owner wanted me to take it. I do not know his number.
