Post Oil in the turbo intake

Hi All,

I have had a problem with a white/blue(?) smoking car over the last 2 days, and also an amount of stumbling when accelerating under load, and as such I wanted to check water/oil problems. I've ripped out the plugs to examine for a wet piston...... don't have one, and also don't have that milky feeling!. Once I took the MAF off, I noticed that there was a lot of oil (about a teaspoon) gathered in the turbo intake.

Now to me, that Oil could come from a few places:
1. blown rings - would then lead to a high content of oil in the breather hose, but that's quite dry!
2. Blown oil channel on the head gasket - would probably give me a wet piston / fouled plugs, which I don't have!
3. Turbo Bearings or seals - the old blow-by issue!. I do have a large amount of radial play (1-1.5mm), but I'm just checking with Kokeln now to see if that is normal.

Can anyone suggest other avenues for me to pursue to fix my car!!!??

Thanks

The play in your turbo is a concern, however, a certain amount of oil can be expected in the intake after so many years of use. How much smoke are you talking about?

Not a hell of a lot of smoke, but I'm worried the stumbling is a direct cause of oil somehow affecting the air/fuel system, and maybe causing some heavier problems. It's also never smoked before the llast couple of days (i would have expected a more gradual 'smoking' if it's just down to mileage.

I've also considered in the meantime that it may have something to do with worn valve guides. As I say, the oils consumption is quite high.

I'm just praying that, in a way, it is just the turbo or guides, and not the piston rings!

Do a leak down test. If it looks OK, then rebuild the turbo. You also should look at you AFR under boost.

Found the problem.... sort of! Unfortunately, I'd stripped too much down to do a leak test last night, but I've spotted a shed load of oil in the No.1 inlet valve. The head's coming off tomorrow morning, and will be rebuilt. I'll also do a major check on the valve/seal to make sure that's the problem, and not the rings on No.1. keep your fingers crossed! I'm gonna leave the turbo for now, as I think that's not the main problem any more!

The afr was reading normal throughout, and I always use mobil1 (5w40 I think!) regardless of the weather!, but thanks guys!
