Cool better gas mileage w/ straight pipe????

I've been testing my car's setup lately in regard to exhaust system on the car and found some interesting things. First of all, a recent smog inspection indicated i was running fairly lean on the factory setting of the AFM! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> I turned it richer, replaced the spark plugs and the car ran better.

I decided to run straight pipe on my car and noticed that i can go longer on a single tank of gas than i did before! Of course I ran the cat on to see how many miles i can get out of new plugs and the richer AFM setting. My calculations are as follows...

W/ Straight Pipe: Approx. 248 miles
W/ Catalytic Convertor: 230 miles
NOTE: Both tests were performed until reserve light came on.

Of course I could be wrong but I am wondering if there are any European 944s on this board that run real good. BTW my car has 171,000 mi on it now if those figures look low, I could have a compression leak..

You MUST have something wrong. I'm regularly going 450 miles from fill-up to reserve light. Granted, my car has a bigger tank. Last time I did the numbers, I got 27 and change MPG.

Exactly. I drove on a 4k mile trip recently, every tank came above or near 27mpg. Not below... I have 190k miles and 10k on a head rebuild.

You know i was getting 27MPG too. I was really amazed. I left from Hayward, Ca, to the bottom of the grapevine near L.A. before refeuling. I think I could have made it to magic mountain but didn't want to push it.

I'm getting a high flow cat and new muffler put on this week. This muffler will have a silencer.

I'm wondering how much louder your car is with a straight pipe?

I once had this muffler on my car.

If your bored you can read my review here. Kinda of funny reading something I wrote 5 years ago

how loud is it??? Right now it's stupid loud because of my Dynomax straight thru. I'm thinking of going with a Flowmaster now since the perforated tube rattles when hot.

One difference is that the 84 944 has a much smaller gas tank than the later models.............

Someone may have the numbers, but from memory standard was 17gal on pre-oval cars and after 86 it was 21gal. On 85.5 models, I have seen both for some reason (I have a 21 gal).

I have been getting around 295 miles when the fuel light comes on and usually fill up at 310-330mi. I also do a lot of interstate driving though around 2800-3000 rpm. I am very interested in getting a Bursch header and cat-pipe, but I do not want it to be obnoxious. I get many compliments on the current setup w/ just a B&B catback. Anyone have or ever run a header/cat-pipe and B&B/SFR/GHL setup before on an NA? I think the screen that is placed in the entrance of the cat is clogged up, the rest of the 20 year-old cat has dissengrated itself into tiny black little muffler bearings. By stock muffler sounds like a mirracha!

I did an actual mileage driven to fuel used test a couple of months ago. My car is essentially stock, and it came in at 30.3 mpg, and that was mostly around town! That is also assuming that I indeed have a 21 gal tank. I think the mileage you actually get is highly dependent on how you drive your car. If you really stomp it like a sports car, naturally mpg goes down fairly quick. My driving is not overly aggressive, but I don't putt-putt either. Plus I use high test gas a low viscosity oil and new plugs. So, in the end, I imagine its a combination of a whole bunch of things, not just one in particular.
