Thumbs up Pic of the project, and a few questions.

I need a new windshield on the 87 NA. I can get one off of a parts car.. I would have to remove it, and install it. Having never done this before, is it worth the effort?? I'm afraid of cracking the "donor" windshield during removal.. The price is right if I do it myself...
Ok here she is..
<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/chris924simage6.jpg" alt=" - " />

Its a project.. I need to paint it, and generally put the interior back together.. rebuild front calipers, and so on.. and so on..

EDIT- corrected color code- duh- i pulled the pic off of the 924s of the build sheet..
<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/optioncode944.jpg" alt=" - " />

Nope- color code LM5U. (i.e- you tell me- I thought it was Zermatt, I'm obvoiusly WRONG..)
It needs paint on the Driver's side, currently in grey primer. I purchased it originally to part it out- I wanted the seats for the 924s, but.. New WP, belts, clutch, Sony CD, Full leather interior, runs great- 86K miles.
The interior was removed for paint-
The PO was gonna spray it a different color- lost interest and bought an 83 944 with 27K miles- very clean.

My G/F would prefer the Charcoal Metallic I was looking at, but the seller wanted too much, and the interior electrical was a nightmare (NOTHING worked.)- but who knows.. what's one MORE car...

Needless to say, I plan on doing most all of the work on this one. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

meaning.. see if I can remove it without destroying it? anyone replaced a windshield themselves? Its worth a try - any special tools or adhesives required?

ut-oh... dont let julie see it.. looks like saphire to me.. (then again i dont know **** about 944 paints... but it could be...)

btw chris, congrats on yer new baby.

as far as the window goes.. have you ever done this before on a car before.. any car? if not, find a friend who has, and have them help you. you dont wanna crack that sob. even people who have done it before have shattered them. as tom said, try it out with the cracked one.. see how it is coming out. also wear gloves, so you can grip the glass and not get cut (actually you should get the suction cups the shops use)... but the edges of the windows can slice you good from what i have heard (may not be acurate, but again.. its what ive heard)

forgot to add this..

tools:

razor blade to cut the old seal and free up the window.. (be super careful) suction cups with handles to correctly hold the glass as you remove and replace. you will need the correct sealent, and tools for the seals.. (its more complicated than just slapping it on and gluing it in per say.. its gotta be done right, with tools to remove excess sealent, to run along the window to make sure the seal is straight etc... then again this may be the old fashoned way..only seen it done on a documentary where they restore a Jag E-type)

although not difficult it seems to be a teadeous, and maybe nerve racking job as far as getting it done correctly with out screwing somthing up.

again.. my advice, find a friend whose done this and has the tools or whatever, and have him help you if you do it yourself. best to be safe than sorry.

when youre done, you have a new skill, and you can teach others how to do it.. including me! also take pics explaining the process in depth!

best of luck!

ps.... i think i be heading out to 944 fest. let me know whats going on with your weekend there. feel free to email me with 944 fest or porsche or somthing in the subject

oh and by the way.. KEEP THE FAITH!

Harry, too late, saw it! Looks very much like my Sapphire Blue Metallic baby! But it has the wrong wheels, and it's the wrong year!

Glad to see you with a 944 added to your collection, Chris!
See, isn't it nice to save these from being parted out?

Julie,

so is it saphire? or does it seem too dark, and too silver/not enough blue to be a saphire?

i knew it was the wrong year, wrong wheels, and maybe even off in the paint color, but that was the 1st thing that popped in my head.

I tried to do that once. In attempting to remove a good windshield from my wrecked 924S I cracked it when I was 80% done on getting it out .

I just had 20th st auto put in a replacement (factory used) for $125

Well worth it!
